Week #3 The Differentiator Bike Cops

Comedy is so much more than just funny dialogue. Bike Cops will make you laugh with physical, visual and scripted humour. That means using the camera as a way to tell jokes – funny pans, reveals, zooms, physical jokes… the list goes on. It’s what clever shows like Arrested Dev. and Community have pulled off. Canada deserves a show that embraces a wide range of comedy. That’s what Bike Cops is.

Crisp, sweet and twisted. Wait... isn't that just like a honey crueller? Aahhhhh... I get it! True Canadian inspiration for a cop show. Make mine a double double and serve more up quick!

I am a fan of how the team is promoting the project. There is really some solid work being done with these challenges. I like the "21 Jump Street" feel to the content with the mix of "Super Troopers" and "Cops." I like to potential for conflict in the show. Best of luck in the voting stage!

We wanted to show our audience how our show would be different instead of tell them (there is a description next to the video to help explain the style). We'd be doing physical gags, (arms through the arm holes) using the camera to tell the joke (panning over to the puddle of blood that Officer Spooner biked through) and the off-beat sense of humour that comes with the show (Spooner talking to his bike). Hope that helps make it clearer for you. Thanks for watching!

The description on the right side of your video isn't reflected very much in the video itself. I'm not seeing nearly the amount of physical and camera-related gags that there should be given the concept, while I have seen it in the similarly themed "Campus Law," which is also in this competition. They're drawing inspiration from Edgar Wright, and you can see it in their trailer. You have to make us believe you can actually pull these things off, and not just tell us that you can.

    Marshall's Photo
    Marshall J. 2  posted 10 years ago

I totally agree with you, Jas. This concept deserves way more time than just a minute and a half of physical and visual humour; something around 22 minutes probably. Surprised you didn't catch the homage to the tool-up sequence in Edgar Wright's Hot Fuzz at the end of our video. Thanks for the feedback!

Heightening the stakes is what comedy is all about! We want to put our bike cops in all types of scenarios, yes, even mundane ones. The common thread is that they turn every situation into a high stakes episode of hilarious police work.

The best comedy comes from having a great mix of people! When we created the cast for the show, the first word that came to mind was 'eclectic'. We knew the squad was going to be a hodge-podge of misfit cops that ended up in Bike Patrol for one reason or another, so it's great to show that variety as part of our videos. Thanks for watching and commenting Wendel!

Great concept. Looking forward to more. And yeah, interactions with real Bike Cops/stories from them would be a great addition.

Truthfully our first interaction with an actual Bike Cop was to ask if they could still have wicked-sweet mustaches on the force, and yep, they can! So that's why officers Spooner and Styles have been sporting those dashing 'staches. First thing tomorrow we're going to go find some Bike Cops and convince them to regale us with stories of their time in the line of duty. Thanks for the suggestion Brian!

I like your video. Great acting too. I didn't get the body part. I didn't find too many laughs here but maybe I missed something. The idea is different and I hope you go onto the next round. Good luck!!!

Spot on Liz! And thanks for the comment. I think Sharon's right though that we missed out on some jokes because of the voice-over. We're very excited to show off more of our comedy chops in our next video, so stay tuned!

Hey Sharon, as a viewer, I missed the body bit at first too. Then I spotted the clue in the scene where Spooner has run through the crime scene with his bike and 'ruined everything'.

Sweet writing on the part of the Bike Cop crew with the synchronized voice over! Think I'll apply as their forensic advisor now.

I thought it was clever at the ending how you were talking to your bike. I don't have too much to comment on besides that it would have been nice to have shown some behind the scenes pictures of the crew of your show. Understandably that was an optional request, but I think the more you guys get yourself shown and the more jokes you manage to throw out there the higher your chances will be for making it just that much further. Good luck guys, I've liked all your videos so far!

Thanks for the feedback Christina! You're totally right that we should be showing off more of our cast and crew. Our producer posts some great behind the scenes stuff on the Bike Cops Instagram, check it out! instagram: bikecopstheshow

The concept of bicycle cops handling the kind of calls we see on the headier cop dramas, and then playing that contrast for laughs, is a good one. It's all about respect, right? ;-)

I like the idea for your show and I was just curious if you have any funny stories of interactions with real bike cops that might have inspired this idea or that might inspire future episodes?

You guys got a lot going for you. The things is I feel you are concerned that you have to make things outrageous to be funny. The fact is some of the calls cops get sent in for are more funny for their mundaneness. How they deal with them makes them charming, ironic, funny. I wonder if you might benefit from a bit more of that in your vids because style wise you are really strong. Anyhow... just a few words of encouragement. great work

Great points, Ron. We wanted to show off some of the more outrageous physical and visual jokes our show can pull off (we love that type of humour), but you're right that it also has potential for being funny without being over-the-top. We're excited to show you lots more. Thanks for the feedback!

It was awesome to see more elements of the show since I've been a big fan of Bike Cops since day one!

My only piece of constructive criticism is to try and stay a bit closer to the demands of the challenge since this played a bit more like a trailer for the show than a video explaining what makes it different. I only say this because I want to see you guys in the top 5! Keep on being hilarious, Bike Cops team!

Thanks for the feedback Dylan! We got a lot of comments from viewers asking to know more about the show, so this week we wanted to reveal a bit more about the structure and plot of the first season. It meant we left out talking about the style and personality of the show - but we did include it in the description of the video! Thanks again for watching, we'll do our best to be in the top 5!

    It’s a bike, it’s a cop, …it’s a bike cop!

Cool to see some of the other characters and the bike jokes are great. Acting as the suspect’s arms was a great gag and a fresh take on a classic bit.

This could easily go in the direction of just mall cop jokes.... for bike cops, but it seems to try to head in a nivel direction. Stay away from generic "you're not really a cop" jokes.

Not gonna lie. I actually said "well this one looks like it will suck." as I put it on. I kind of feel bad now. I see a solid set of characters with great dialogue being played out in an original concept. All in all I am about stuffed full of crow. I hope to see more of these guys in the future.
