Week #3 The Differentiator Killing It

How is Killing It original? The show is high concept (at least one person dies on screen every week) and the writing is funny, sharp, and dark. But instead of telling you this, why not show you? We shot a concept video from our pilot episode that begins with four roommates discovering the Grim Reaper in their apartment. He claims that one of the friends must die, and they get to pick who. Enjoy.

Great work. I love the pacing. You're hitting all the beats perfectly and giving each snappy line just enough time to land before moving onto the next. Some of the other video's I've watched allow their jokes to die on screen instead of the people and the energy just drains away... not Killing it, the energy is awesome. Keep it up and I can't wait to see what's next!

Killing It has to be the most professional of the shows on here. It's very slick, the comic timing is excellent, and it feels like something that's already on TV. The dark, sardonic humor fits our time, but it may be hard to keep the characters likable over many episodes.

I really loved this weeks video and the laid back nature of the grim reaper. Almost fell out of my chair when the angelic singing turned out to be a ring tone. Funny stuff, love to see you advance.

I find this show quite hilarious. I like how you set the Grim Reaper up, his features and actions. It's interesting, and keeps me wanting to know what happens next. As you said, a character dies each week and although that is a very unique idea and a great idea for the show, I think you might also want to be cautious because you could lose viewers very easy. But then again, if you don't give time for the viewers to get attached to a character then there's no loss at all. But either way, I find this quite enjoyable and do hope to see you progress!

The concept is fun, it grabs attention but I think you can pump up the stakes. Maybe it would be funnier if the characters cared more and were a little more realistic in trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

NOOOO!!! Not Amy!!! She was my favorite character! LoL. But in all seriousness. Killing off a character, every week? It kinda sounds like a cult. Not to mention the little, fact, that if you kill off a new character, every week? You're eventually gonna run out of characters. Then what?

I like the concept and the execution (pun unintended) of the video was good. Perhaps it's our cultural expectation for blood and gore, I was a little disappointed by the simple nature of Amy's death by finger snapping. It doesn't have to be gruesome, but it didn't have the comedic punch I was hoping for. Still like the idea and wish you luck in the vote!

I love the concept for this show! It reminds me of a few of my fave cartoons from when I was younger (stuff like the grim adventures billy and mandy and south park). Did you guys maybe take a bit of influence from those shows? i.e the dark and satirical comedy style? Id really like to see how this concept will progress I love black humor shows, the darker the better . Good luck I hope you guys make it into the top fifteen and I really hope dookie squad will see you guys in the top fifteen. Peace and Love

Real reaper ringtone, nice touch. Funny when I realized the chanting wasn't coming from "the aura" but actually from his phone. St. Peter as the caller, that's very funny too.
The camera looking through dead Amy's eyes was spooky and impressive filming from that angle.

Cute, love the ring tone. I'm confused about the concept - Do characters come back to life in the next episode? (a la Kenny from Southpark? ) Or do you have to keep adding new characters?

    Michael O. 0  posted 10 years ago

Hi Sarah. In our show if someone dies, they die. They're dead. Gone. So you're right, every episode we're going to introduce at least two or so side characters to be potentially nominated for death. Sometimes they'll be family members, coworkers, sometimes they'll be random people off the street. Anyone can die!

That being said, Death does have a lot of power, so perhaps I shouldn't say that everyone will definitely stay dead...

The simpsons already did it. Southpark already did it. its tough to back up something when its completely stolen from somewhere else. Cool Ringtone though. Ill give props to you on that one.

Hi Brian. Our concept, along with many of the top concepts in this competition definitely have elements that've been explored by other shows in the past. I feel what set's all of us apart comes from our characters and writing. In fact, it's funny that you referenced The Simpsons and South Park, because South Park actually did an episode about how The Simpsons have already used almost every comedic idea for a show! If you're interested in learning more about this perspective, search for "Simpsons Already Did It". Thanks for your comment!

That's a really good note, Rachel. We've spent long sessions trying to hash out how much morality our main characters are going to have. Too much and the show suddenly becomes serious. Too little, and it seems like nothing matters. It's a tough thing to get right! That said, your suggestion is one we've considered and maybe even agreed with.....

Agreed. A really funny mission 3 video. Looking forward to seeing lots more from this team and concept.

Thanks for the great feedback Lauren. I think we might have to steal your "watch people die on screen instead of jokes" tagline somewhere...
