Roll For Damage is a comedy about five people who gather once a week to play a Dungeons and Dragons-esque pen-and-paper role-playing game. Their lives outside of the game are hilariously tumultuous and are often reflected in their “in-game” characters and scenarios. Thanks to careful writing and a wicked art style, the in-game portions of the show come to life with clarity and intrigue.
Fave 59 Views 1076Still one of my favs moving through week 5. I like that you gave us some back story on some of the characters but I've love to know more about what brought them all together and what keeps them coming back to play each week. Folks who've never played RPGs might not get why the weekly meetups would continue so I look forward to seeing how your main character deals with this new-to-her world and finding out what keeps her coming back for more!

Nerrrrrrrrrds! This makes me wish that Ogre would come in and wreck up the place :P but the mix of these people could keep this show fresh. The art is well done you guys, keep it up!
Nerdariffic; that is my rating for this video after careful consideration and review so that I might meet the one hundred character requirement and earn another merit badge in the comedy coup competition.
I hereby state that the following commentary is over the required 100 characters and is as follows: love it!
You guys have one of the best Ideas I have seen in this competition! Congratulations on making it this far! if my friends don't win this thing. I'm pulling for you guys for sure!
Love the artwork guys, excellent, unique aspect of the show. We hope to feature artwork at certain times in our show if it gets picked up but don't have the resources to demonstrate it right now. Fingers crossed for the future! Good luck tonight with the top 15!
Wow, you guys knocked it out of the park with your sell sheet, good stuff! Always been a fan of this one. Keep on rolling, roll for damage-ers! May the die be in your favour!
Your sell sheet is outstanding. One of the best ones on here for sure. It's a shame you didn't get pro pick this week, or at the very least an honourable mention. Hoping to see you in the top 15.
There’s seriously great talent on this show. If you guys don’t top this thing, please keep trying new concepts, K? We need people this funny on TV!
I haven't seen anything quite like this before and so far, it looks very appealing. The cartoon-y effects are unique, but not out of place, the delivery is that nice mix of dead-pan and straight-faced and the concept has a lot of potential to make a great show.
I've seen some VERY funny people in this. Not sure how long the concept can be sustained. Curious what we’re building towards.
Wow that art work is really really good. All of the design is this is quite good and compliments the entire show very very well. Wishing you the best in the competition, your good friend Sharon.
What an awesome sell sheet! Props to your art department this show is so visually engaging and I think its a great way to get DnD on screen effectively without blowing the budget! I'm very excited to see more.
Great video this week! I love the idea for this show, it really takes me back to my d&d days. Also, the art is incredible. Good luck in the rest of the competition.
Like the overlay of art work! It is refreshing to see something different - good job. Great characters with depth and conviction. Best of luck in reaching the top 15.
A great video and a great idea for a show. I think you guys summed everything about your project in a nutshell, and made it clear why people will want to watch it. I think it's really cool how your using the roleplaying as a way to examine the characters of the players, rather than just using the fact that they play RPGs as a joke in itself.
I really hope this goes far. I just love the idea and the concept. The actors themselves also seem really good at the funny.
Great cast of characters and good dialogue. You don't have to have played dungeons and dragons to find the humor in this. Can't wait to see the characters develop more. Also love the incorporation of the art into the show. Really unique.
the sell sheet is really great, very appealing. however i dont really "get" the roll playing game aspect. maybe thats because im just an old lady but i dont know what that is and i dont think id ever tune in
Really love the focus on the art in this one. I think the way you're adding it to the "real world' is an eye catching way to help the visualize what is going on, and much more innovative then cutting to boring character drawn images all the time.
The art looks amazing and love that idea to bring it in this is also a really interesting idea for a tv show nut sure how comedic it will be however. Just doesn't seem that funny to me.
the setting is really adding a lot to the motion of this picture. perhaps including a bit more musical and graphical effects can help you guys go a long way
Hey guys,
As I know many of the people involved in this project. it is hard to say, I am currently pitching a very very similar project. ( http://m.imdb.com/video/wab/vi3922570265/ ) It has been a finished short that I have been pitching for a year and a half as a TV concept. We did not enter the coup because CBC owns all rights to the project in the fututre making it hard to keep the rights for to pitch to other broadcasters. Also we are trying to get traction for our show using film fest circut. I am just attempting to protect the work of the Advanced Wizards & Warriors team, myself and the 3 years of work dedicated to make Advanced Wizards & Warriors. Please see the ( https://m.facebook.com/advancedwizardsandwarriors?ref=bookmark ) Thanks, Aaron Merke
So the visuals are great and now I care about the team and characters. Please do this show, even if you don't win.
You guys are doing a fantastic job - I am really digging the illustration/animation elements. It really seems like you're having a good time putting it together, which makes it a pleasure to watch.
Big fan of the show. One of my favourites on here. Love the videos. And I'm a big fan of the animation, but how awesome would it be if it went into full on animation during the D&D sequences, with moments of live action when there's interruptions from the RL, or just for some perspective. Obviously that would take a budget, but that's what the accelerator is for!
Andrew Barber should def. be on TV in his own show. Same goes for Ivan Decker. These are some funny, smart, witty dudes. Great platform for all! The world is ready for a show about Dungeons & Dragons, or whatever geeky/nerdy fantasy game you cats are playing. Artwork is wonderful. Please make this so my brother can stop watching re-runs of The Simpsons. ;-) j.
I love the idea of the art overlays. I don't think i've ever seen it before, and I think it could be really interesting. Really like your guys' concept here and would love to see a bunch of Vancouver groups in the top 15 =)
I think the art work is amazing. It's smart, creative, and (I'm paraphrasing here, I'm sure) as you say "an extension of the characters." However, my qualm with the show is that the characters don't seem engaging to me, say like with Depflies. I would like to see a realness to the characters to contrast the art. Good luck.
your video to me is just alright. im sorry but i just cant get into it. its a little bit too "out there" for me, and i have to imagine probably mainstream audiences, too. its a bit too niche. that said i think it could be a very successful web series.
Well done, I especially like your focus on the art. It feels like a attribute that not many other shows in this competition may share. Really glad it was highlighted. This was a good catch up if you haven't seen anything else.
very creative. keep it up
haha! I can totally see how this pitch could evolve into comedy gold. Great talent speaks and this concept looks like it has all the variables alongside a unique vision! Best of luck!
I like the use of graphics and overlay but concerned about the back stories.
Neat graphics guys and interesting concept - congratulations on making it to the top 55 and I hope to see you in the top 15!
There was this guy Stevon, he was a dungeon master and he was 2 years then me but when I was 15 it seemed like a lot at the time. Anyway, he taught me that sometimes you die for no reason. That's it, that's my story. Stevon if you read this, thanks.
Great visuals as always, but I was a little disappointed with the some of the back stories of the characters. This video just didn't really hit the comedic mark for me even though I really like this project overall. Look forward to more videos. Good luck!
Obviously you guys have found great inspiration. I think it will speak to a fairly large audience. I am also happy to see a female in the ranks, vital to your balance. And the animation is a stroke of genius! Good luck going forward! Don't forget to check out The Eligible Bachelors, our week 6 vid will be nutz!
I really like the animation overlay and the premise. I have also been blown away by every Peter n'Chris show I have seen so I trust the comedic and storytelling sensibilities.
I was an old school Dungeons and Dragons player. We played everyday for 3 years, at least. I still have some of my sheets
I think the artwork is hype already, but maybe it could be hyped up even more. If you guys planned to add full animations, next level graphics that stay true to the artsy-ness but then just start becoming characters and interacting with characters subconsciousness? Ideas!
Good job on combining videography and art to create a unit format for an entertaining concept. Oh, how I love to watch shows about people who haven't got themselves pulled together!
Here are my picks for the top 15, no particular order:
Human Town
Heir Heads
Depflies
Wharf Rats
Just Passing Through
Goons
Blackwater Music
Randy Justice
The Lease
Grahm Clark: Wilderness Man
Roll for Damage
Toronto After Dark
Killing It
Scratch Tracks
Dope Ass World
Good luck in the contest. The video is well done. It’s getting to be a tight contest. I wish you all the best. What’s next if you don’t make the cut? You should check out your local film festival.
Adam! Ian! Guys!! This is awesome!! It looks smart and funny and the art is badass. congratulations on making it to top 55 and good luck on making it all the way!
I like the drawings, the creativity, it really feels like something new the way you guys are using it and everything. The female actress is really charming too! I don't know much about D & D but I like that it's not about that, it's about more.
I'm a big D&D fan. So, I could really see myself getting into this one. Loving the art too. It's a unique way to tell a story. good luck in the vote this weekend. Hope you guys move on.
Wow, this looks like fun! I am watching this one for sure, and not only because I am a gamer (though that doesn't hurt). This video was a bit expositional (is that a word?), but I'm glad you added in clips from the show. The art is a really cool idea that I'm looking forward to. The show needs more women though!
I like the concept. I'm a big gamer and of course love seeing the theme in Television or Movies. That being said, I can't say I'm drawn to any of the characters or the angle at which you are coming at this from... I wish you the best, though because your heart must be in the right place!
Cool hype. Cool idea. Cool show. :) Good luck!
Thank you for giving us a sneak peek into your characters this week. I really do want to see more of them. Also liked your sell sheets. There is a lot going on visually in your posters, but I don’t feel overwhelmed by them. They are clear and easy to scan through and quickly read.
Great Job guys!
Sometimes I roll for damage when I'm NOT roleplaying...
I think this is awesome, keep up the good work!!!
Good job in explaining who you are and what you want to do; i like the way you filmed this video, with the drawings, and real people. That was very creative. I was impressed. I wish you luck in this contest; good work!
If you've got a good concept, depth of characters, unlimited potential for interesting story lines that make me laugh hysterically, then I hope you will continue onto the next level. Best of luck to you!
the art is REALLY cool, makes your show so unique and i love how you use it to enhance everything without overdoing it.
Your concept seems very creative and unique. It would be very interesting to see something like this on prime time TV. I also find your artwork great, kudos to your artist.
I was very confused about your show at first and wasn't sure it would be for me. However, this week I enjoyed how you incorporated more of the personal stories and how they will intermix with the game. Good luck with top 15.
love the integration of the art into your show. it gives so much extra life and flare to the show without resorting to campy and played out graphics. looking forward to seeing how it all develops. good luck.
I keep saying it: really looking forward to Brian Fukushima's art in this! You've got all those talented local comedians too but the art is really what sets this apart! Glad to see the most recent video hype it more!
Gonna say it again and I know you're well aware of it. But love the art, it is quite slick, hip and radicool
This is an interesting concept with the art adding another dimension to the show. It sounds as though you have the right recipe for an ensemble cast and I hope that you get a chance to show us more by advancing to the next round.
I could use an escape from real life or should I say RL this would be a great show to help me do it!
Adam's secret family is probably real because you cant make that stuff up. Anyways this video gave a glimpse into the casts actual lives vs only in game stuff, I think a lot of people probably were curious about that. All we need now is a scene from one or two of there lives to give us the full idea. Anyway. GL HF ASL
it is a very interesting way to story tell. I would definitely check this out if it was on TV. also I love the cat's animation enhancement.
I love it, reminds me to get away from the day to day life and do something different every so often. This kind of shows with the imagination put into it keeps me young.
So much potential. Honestly, one of the reasons I keep watching is to see the excellent artistry and the creative ways you guys weave it right into the videos. Keep it up!
so handsome
This is one of the shows in this competition that took my by surprise. I really didn't expect to see such a creative use of art combined with live action visuals so well. I am definitely a fan of this show, and I hope to see you in the top 15. Keep doing what you're doing, because it is awesome.
There are so many things that draw me to this show: the unique concept, a dynamic cast of characters, the incredible artwork, and the quality of the camera work. This is a team that clearly knows how to deliver well-developed content - and I hope that they will go far in this competition!
I agree, the hallmark of this series is the amazing visuals. Reminds me of an old YTV show called "Student Bodies". I also really liked how you introduced each character and the actors that play them. I'd like to know more about their in-game characters. I especially like how in the real-life portion of the show no one is sure of what the DM is up to, just like they wouldn't know in-game either.
Really really good. This is one of my favourites from the beginning! I want to watch this show. Seriously.
I know these guys, so friggin' funny! IN REAL LIFE! but this show's premise is dope and I want to netflix binge it all right now!
I feel that this will be one of the top 15. I liked what I saw here and I am looking forward to what they plan to bring out next. good job.
I love this concept & the incorporation of art & imagination! I'm hyped :)
Great job guys and congratulations on making it to week 5, looking forward to seeing what week 6 brings. good luck.
Highlighting the characters in the Hype It video works very well for you guys. I can relate to them all. The video also answers a lot of questions people probably had about the show. Great job guys. Congrats on making op 55 and good luck getting into the top 15!
This reminds me a lot of the D&D episode of Community, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd love to watch a whole show exploring the idea of escapism through game. Its a really interesting human concept. Plus the art style is awesome. It really brings out the core idea of a show in a visually interesting way.
Love the art overlay idea used as imagination, very creative. I sort of feel like you guys should have a Royal Rumble with Human Town though.
I would think this is like The League but with D&D which is not a bad thing at all. The art style is really eye catching and playful.
I like your graphics.
I really like the videos you guys put out. I especially like all the great graphics added to real life video its very visually interesting. Good job on this weeks challenge and your sell sheets.
I liked hearing more about the show in this week's video! Sounds like it could be really great. I like knowing more about this rag-tag group of characters. There's a bunch of talented people involved in this project. I hope it goes far. I want to see more! And the art! So good.
I was going to rate it seven, but the squid cat took it up to eight. Great idea, great characters, and really great line art overlays. Good luck in the voting tomorrow!
Hey - good video and a great explanation of the concept and presentation of the show and characters, but I have to say I'm not feeling the hype out of it. To go with game terms, it's a bit too much stat block and not enough flavour text. Still loving the look and premise of the show though!
Fantastic video! I love the cast breakdown (Dog Talent Agency killed me) and I love the details on the art and how it will be used. I'm really stoked to see more.
You guys did a great job this week. Great backgrounds on the characters and the situations. And I really like the art - it sets it apart from a lot of the other videos. Well done and good luck.
Good job on the video - Its nice to see deeper into the characters and the storyline. And of course - lovely art, it really makes the whole project stand-out!
Once again you nailed it. Hit the purpose of this weeks mission. Stayed on mission and conveyed all the necessary info while still finding the right balance with humor. The info needed, the humour wanted. Keep riding that line.
Congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and good luck on making it to the Top 15!! I absolutely love this idea! Sparks an interest in me that not many videos have so far. Great job! Keep it up
LOVE the graphic aspect to this concept, I've been wanting this to be done for soooooo long, glad to see someone really grab it. This story could really work well, having their real lives bleed into their game lives and of course (even better) vice-versa.
So many people I like! Also, D&D as life-coping, this is basically how I use it.
I like your video and the way you did that with the cartoons drawing and the real stuff. It also explained well your mission and show. Some people mentioned their Hype it event and some didn't. I am not sure why. But I do hope yours is a blast! Good luck to you four!
I like that we get to know more about each of the characters and their daily lives in this video. Congratulations on making the Comedycoup tiop 55 and best of luck for the top 15.
Great video guys. Love the character detailing and going into the art style and what makes the show different. Excellent example of a press video. Kudos.
Very different idea and I like it. Please don't take this the wrong way but the idea of these loser type characters trying to be winners through this game is great. I like it. Kudos and good luck.
Interesting concept. How much does it revolve that isn't around the game?
It varies from episode to episode. It all depends on the story that we're trying to tell that week and if the game adds anything.
I like watching your vedeo, the art effect i like very much, hope to see more of it.Iliked the concept of it all gook luck guys in the futur.
Like your overlay/background of sketches. distinctive to this show.
It's an interesting concept. Getting to know the characters and their backgrounds makes the show much more appealing. I just think that having it revolve around the role playing game really limits the story development, however, I could be very wrong.
Love the concept. I find the illustrations really entertaining and like how they're almost like another character. I don't understand the game the characters are playing, but that's okay...still interesting!
Great to hear more about the premise and I like what I hear! I would definitely check this out and like what you said below about every choice having subsequent consequences. Does that mean though that if I miss a week I'd be out of the loop or worse, kicked out of the game? ;)
Killer job on the sell sheet too!
Good luck this weekend and hopefully see you in the Top15
Darcy - WingMom.ca
The talent is clearly A+, good luck!
I really like this submission, it would be great to know more about the characters lives and see how their struggles in the real world parallel their events in the game, and what they can learn from that. Very cool.
That's the idea!
Obvs, I think it's fantastic. And badass. Your video was one of the few that actually gave a good idea of what the show is about. Way to follow directions, R4D!
Okay this is awesome and the art work is be-U-tiful! But you know what would be more awesome? If the Dungeons and Dragons fantasy world came to life or something like that! Basically, I'd rather actually play DnD than watch other people play it, so there's got to be something more than them sitting around a table playing DnD. Really curious about the full season arc!!!!! This has the potential to be epic. Please be epic.
Natalia congrats on being #1 NLer on the leaderboard! :)
Would love to hear what you think about the evolution of our concept WingMom.ca
(Sorry RollForDamage for posting here, no other way to do it directly. See my comment above about your show :)
Oh man, I have so many things I want to tell you Natalia, but I don't want to spoil anything! Here's what I CAN tell you: Every action in every episode has consequences that bleed into everything that comes afterwards...
i love this show because it looks so cool. that art blows me away and makes me laugh every time. top 15 material, good luck guys
I liked learning more about the individual stories. Also, I don't mind if it IS about nerds in a basement. That's what intrigued me in the first place!
Hey guys- Great video. You explained your concept really well. The idea with the art is really cool sounding and definitely unique. I think that will draw in a lot of art lovers and creative people. Great job and good luck.
Great video, well designed sell sheet (poor ol' Marcy). You guys do a great job of pulling people into a world they've never been in before. Love the use of artwork in your show.
Great informative video, exactly what the media would call for. Also congrats on the articles and the interview. I'm sure your comedy event will be awesome. Keep it rolling guys!
That was a great simple video, it really sold me on the show and what it is all about, i now have a way better understanding as to what you guys are trying to put together and it makes so much more sense to me after seeing this, Now looking forward to what you bring us next. Hope you guys have a great event tonight
One of my faves. Christine kills it and as a fellow DnD patriot, I find they do it justice. The art is incredibly badass and the storyline is super funny.
Still one of my favs moving through week 5.
One of the better clips this team has put together. I'm still wary of the reach that a D&D show has but kids these days are way more accepting then they used to be, so maybe. I like how this clip highlights the non-RPG plot potential. Having the game as a premise more than the focus strikes me as an ideal way to make this concept a show and not simply something that's worth a few laughs on YouTube.
Ah Brian Fukushima does the art?! Great use of talent! I appreciated the summaries of each character, but I don't know who this can be a sitcom rather than just a webseries? How will your story ideas translate into 13 or 26 22-minute long episodes, and still keep things interesting for viewers?
Really nice package this week... and who doesn't like a good package complement! The video and the sell sheet are among the best I've seen yet. The video also gave me a much better feel for the over all concept of the show. Great work! Keep it up!
Nice! This had a whole bunch of new information that really made me want to see the show!
You guys obviously have a clear vision and I really hope you get the opportunity to bring these characters to life!
well done this week! I like watching your videos because I love love love the artistry in your videos. I wish I could draw like that but I can't so I like watching you guys!
The secret family and the illegal lifestyle! Hilarious stuff guys! Very well put together and it has marketability! I'd like to see it on TV one day for sure.
This has been one of favourites since the beginning. Love it!
I've been following this one from the beginning and all I can say is that I am excited to see some D&D on the tv. The art aspect is a nice touch! Good job guys!
Can't wait to see more videos. Looks great!
I really like the art incorporation in the show, that alone would encourage me to watch this :)
Also! Great looking sell-sheet!
The Art style is interesting, but will it get in the way of the storytelling and characters? I'm drawn in by the premise more than the look. I like the idea of the art, but would you ever cut that, or is that what makes it unique?
Good question Mark. The art is used exclusively while the players are "in-game." And when it is used, it's either because it helps to clarify action, communicate information, or because it's part of a joke. We would only use it if necessary. As you can see from the other comments in this thread, the visuals have been a great "hook" for getting people interested in the show. It would be difficult for us to abandon them completely. That being said, we certainly don't go looking for excuses to wedge them into scripts. I can easily imagine an episode where there is no art because the story simply didn't call for it.
I'm really hoping this is a show about nerds playing D&D! I've been waiting for a show like that for quite a while now. Anyway, I think that this show will be... *rattle rattle* ... Awesome, and I think the humour is... *rattle rattle* ... Top notch. I'm looking forward to see more, and I don't need my dice to tell me that!
cool sell sheet. Also well done on pitching your show and giving the media information about your show.
