Will Shakespeare & the greatest writers in history are failing out of Bankside University.
View ProjectBlank Verse A Midsummer Night's Dream is about William Shakespeare and the great artists of his time, re-imagined as modern day students at the fictional Bankside University.
Fave 28 Views 438Would've been fun to see a few jokes in the mix with this video too—the concept is kind of interesting but I'm not feeling this as a comedy necessarily, based purely on this mission video.

It seems like some of this is repeated from your other videos but since this is apparently reaching out to new people to watch your show I don't think that matters at all. The idea is smart and it is one of the better produced ones (sound/video quality). Not super funny but the potential is here for sure, I would watch more!
Good concept and well played with the Shakespeare aspect as well. Good luck to the next round.
Best wishes to the top 55 contestant winners and congratulations on having your efforts recognized in this CBC Comedycoup contest. Good Luck to those making the top 15.
I like these fresh face kids. I would like to see more on Shakespeare comedy, dromedy, and mix mash of other playwrites in their work. Life is all that and to see it played out in comedy will make it well worth the traumas, and dramas. :)
Clever idea, I really think you could do a lot with this. It's already funny to think of Shakespeare as a partying University student in the modern day. Hope to see more, good luck moving forward.
Fun!
I'm curious to see if this web based format would have an audience on network TV or if the appeal of the message is contingent upon the media.
What an interesting concept. Leaves room for plenty of story paths to explore I think we relate well to historical characters plopped into our reality and world, so why not good ol William? As long as it doesn't slide into the unnecessary crass zone, it would be an interesting work. Best of Luck to y'all.
nothin like it. i really appreciate what you're doing here. youve got serious game and i have become a big admirer. you deserve to win this contest. you are definitely welcome to entertain me any time of the year. keep it up and be the people youve always wanted to be. also cool car!
Amazing! I really like ya'lls creativity!!
Amazing work. super funny stuff and I truly believe you guys will be top 15 with some other great teams. All the hardwork and dedication this team have presented is extremely outstanding.
Its so cool to see such young artist creating great stuff! I love shakespeare so this could be something that I would watch on Tv
Shakespeare. That word can send shutters though anyone. But you put a spin on it. Hmm. I love your projects to date. Very funny. Way to go.
Congratulations on making it to the Top 55! Creative team, interesting concept. It’s tough to come up with solid product each week so kudos for your hard work. Best of luck moving into the top 15. As a fellow "BFA'er" I appreciate the approach!
hey we just did a production of much ado about nothing in a theatre in montreal, and it's super great to see that this is being brought to some of the common people and fans alike. good job
This is an intelligent comedy; not to say old Willy didn't get drunk and write a few fart jokes. I like the concept and think this could be a very entertaining show. Good luck team!
I like Shakespeare so I know I would really like this show. I would like to watch it on CBC but will still watch you even if you don't win so keep it up. This show might also have a lot of potential in education to help introduce students to Shakespeare.
I like the idea a lot and all the videos so far look like a lot of care was taken into producing it. Interested in where it the story goes
Another straight-shooting video, which can go both ways. But I love the earnestness of it. and the concept could be really good. Reimagining Shakespeare, done correctly, could be really fun.
I think this is a really interesting and unique idea. I think with a great script and interesting characters you might really have something here. Best of luck in the rest of the competition!
I am so in love with the idea of this show. Great videos so far, and hoping you make it on to the next round so I can see more. Thanks for the entertainment, best of luck!
Great concept. Really well thought out. It's the most relatable to the artist world, actors and writers mostly. I'd love to see a bit more lei men content. Keeping the wit and the creativity. It'll be able to reach more audience. Great job!
Good concept, good pitch. People will watch this. Needs to be super smart though! people will criticize this sort of premise. Good luck!
I like modern Shakespeare, so this has a lot of potential. I wonder if it could win against a lot of the other comedies... more blatant comedy... though. Good luck to you!
to be or not to be that is the question, this comedy is readily accessible and everyone loves shakespeare! yeah!!! that stuff needs to be brought to the general public in a big way
This is such a smart and accessible concept. I really hope it captures the imagination of voters.
Good job on this week's challenge. Good luck in the remainder of the competition. You have a funny concept here and hope you make it through the next round! Cheers!
A Midsummer Night's Dream - Young & Passionate characters. Inspiring students. You have made a strong pitch for this weeks vote. Good luck.
very informative video, but no comedy in this clip….
I like your description of the show! It makes sense and is neat and cute! I'd love to see this webseries! Is it online somewhere easy to find?? On youtube??? Keep up the good work, you guys and have fun!
This show has great comedy potential; I really like the new spin you are putting on established TV tropes and am looking forward to what more you can come up with!
i hated when i had to read shakespeare in school so i probably wouldnt want to watch this haha but it still seems kinda funny i guess like the way that that one movie "Ten Things I Hate About You" was based on shakespeare but different this could be like that and it seems pretty clever too
original & fun!
This is such an original concept! Having graduated with a degree in English Literature, it's interesting to see this twist on classic material.
great stuff here guys. its a very smart idea and probably too smart for network tv but there is something here. the writing is sharp, the acting is great. you can tell youre a creative bunch and when a creative bunch keeps their heads together, good things happen. this will go somewhere
Good job with the video. I like the interesting cuts with the voice over of necessary info. Got the point across clearly.
As someone who never really "got" Shakespeare in school (why are there so many words for for other words?), this is something I can relate to, as I've always been a fan of contemporary spins on things!
Really neat concept you guys, I'm really impressed that this already exists as a webseries. It really shows that you have the skills and the follow-through to make this project work. I'm definitely going to check it out and hopefully no matter what you'll keep creating great content. Great job!
i think this is a really strong and interesting concept. as an avid reader and book lover i am totally on board. however, i can see how a more mainstream (and lets face it - stupid :) ) audience might overlook this because they arent interested. well - their loss.
I think it's a great way to bring interest into classic works to the younger generations by modernizing them into the same environment. Of course it's been done many times, but I don't recall ever seeing it in this type of setting. Is your show geared to a younger audience? Would have been great to hear what demographic you're aiming for. I find you guys have a unique humour that sets your apart from the others. Whether or not that's a humour that people are looking for remains to be seen!
I do terribly enjoy modern takes on Shakespeare. Good on all ya'll for taking on such a feat! This is big work. I like that you will appeal to a whole new generation of people who may not as of yet discovered Shakespeare or classic English literature, and perhaps inspire them to delve in! Lots of fun to be had here. ;-) j.
Agree with some comments about wanting this latest video to have a little more punchy humour. Fan of the idea though, looking forward to the next one!
I love the concept for your project. I think this video could have had some more comedic moments while still being informative, but i'd be interested in seeing more!
Although I appreciate the subject of Shakespeare can be bland, I was expecting a little more out of this video. I was expecting maybe a snicker and didn't get that. I did get a decent explanation of what's going on though.
Good to hear a bit of an explanation. Not every video has to be drop dead funny. Well done putting this together and I hope to see more of the same quality in the future.
How did I miss this project for weeks? Love the idea and you seem to make the style work without looking fabricated and trite. Only from my old town! I will be checking out more of this project. Maybe even send a few of my project's votes your way.
Loved the teaser. That's why I followed. Haven't seen the production value and really not seeing the big comedic value. Feels more like a Degrassi style show, dealing honestly with real struggles. Comedy is a part but not a coup.
I don't know, I find this sort of boring. I think I like the, what if Shakespeare was a regular guy thing but it feels like cover band theatre. Why ride on an existing achievement? If I took a cool photo of the Mona Lisa, would that be art? Would it be valid? Also production wise, you were fine but there was nothing really said about your visual aesthetic.
So creative, this project is unique to me I think. I'm not going to be one of those people who try to give you guys hints or tell you how to do your work, it's all compliments from me! I love the whole concept of this project, like I've said before very creative and funny! And as long as you have at least one of those you guys will make it far in this competition, and you guys have both! So best of luck, looking forward to seeing more.
Interesting premise I think it could do well transformed into a modern take. Wonder if the premise of Shakespeare's greatest works actually being created by a creative royal who could not reveal himself will enter into this ... good luck moving forward
great stuff guys. as an english lit major and general book lover i am certainly intrigued by the comment. plus - you're young! love it!
Great video guys! I think that this premise is a sure thing. You will find a home for this project, what ever happens! I wish you the best going forward!
Can't wait for hype it event!!
This is a beautiful idea and I hope that somehow it can see the light of day, Shakespeare transposed into our modern is always interesting, i always thought shakespeare in our day is like a rap star or a youtube star, because they are so popular, that might add hype.
Shakespeare can be a great platform for comedy, even his tragedies. I'm not sure if this would appeal to a wide range of audience but it definitely grabs your attention.
I've been watching since week one. I still don't know if I'm into it yet but It's held my attention so far. Keep doing what your doing.
Good luck. You have worked very hard and comedy coup has a big debt to pay to all the teams that participated.
Hopefully this won't be too highbrow for the average watcher. Definitely an idea that would appeal to a lot of CBC fans though. I would have loved to see more of the clips that you interspersed. Some of that looks like it will be really funny and caught my interest! Thanks for mentioning the diversity. It's nice to see a show that isn't just a bunch of guys in a basement.
This is an interesting concept for sure, I think it is a little niche however, as a lot of people do not have the Shakespeare background to appreciate the humour in this. I myself am one of them. I think this would appeal to a very specific audience.
Thank you for the well done hype :) Not my cup of tea but it might fly. Good luck!
I like your concept. You'd have to educate most of us because we have not studied Shakespeare. This would appeal to many of my Arts friends. Keep up the good work and I wish you well making it to the next level.
Cool idea!
You were very clear in what your concept was all about, which is great, but I'm not sure where you will take your idea from here. I can see this as a difficult sell for TV, much of Shakespearean work of today is forced on school children to read so I can see this as being a disadvantage to your concept.
I like your characters, I think your project is way out there; of course i am not well versed in Shakespeare! I do not know what he would do would he be living here now, but I think you might be able to think up some pretty funny stuff to put in there. Good luck!
Strong work! Sorry we couldn't join you for the #YVR event, but I'm sure it'll rock. Your team has a really clear vision with the determination to do it. Best of luck for the Top 15 voting!
I totally get it, this was a very well thought out show and mission. Kudos to your cast and crew. This is definatly different and I like the concept. I would love to see more and I wish you the best if luck on the next vote. Congratulations for making it this far. Cheers!
I liked your video, the characters and you were all real cute in there. I had not watched any of your videos previously, but I understand what you are trying to do with this project, Best of luck to all your team!
This video was super clear and informative about the show and your goals. I love the subject matter-it is unique. There is definitely a place for intelligent humour. I also appreciate the need for diversity and I'm glad you spoke of it. Great job!
I enjoyed your hype-it video, and I like the clever show concept. You're going for inside humour, but I would be careful to keep it accessible so that it can appeal to a mainstream audience, as well. There's a balance needed to work on network TV. Congratulations on advancing to the Top 55!
Congratulations on making it to the top 55! I like the idea behind this show. Interesting. A comedy though? I don't know. Although I did see comedic elements in your videos I'm not sure if this would keep me laughing...is it supposed to? Good luck in making it to the top 15!
My only quibble was with the hissing when she was speaking. Very distracting.
This whole project feels like it's targeted to Arts students, who will get the nuances. It has potential if it doesn't get too deep into the subject matter as most of us only have a very topical layer of shakespear.
This sounds like an interesting, creative, and quite possibly funny concept. The video didn't get me "hyped" though... maybe not enough zany stuff happened, maybe not enough of a sense of urgency.
Congratulations on making the top 55! I like what you're doing and I would be interested in seeing more. Best of luck!
Hello,i like the idea about Shakepeare,i like your way of thinking and taking part in this vedeo.Very good job all of you it was nice watching and listening to the vedeo good luck to everyone
I came for the Shakespeare, stayed for the Nathaniel Vass and didn't leave until I wrote at least 100 characters!
This could be the kind of thing that lazy high school english teachers would force their class to watch to laugh AND learn.
At first I was dubious at how well this concept would play out, especially since Shakespeare seems like low-hanging fruit compared to an original idea. But, you guys have won me over. I'm glad this isn't just a modern take on his comedic plays, but a modern view of how he wrote them. Pretty cool, keep at it!
I'm noticing that many people who have commented thus far haven't seen the comedic elements of this show yet. For me, the comedic charm from the original web series was generated by the interactions between these reimagined characters - Maybe try to showcase some of the original footage in later challenges? Good luck!
I love Shakspeare so this is right up my alley. Have you guys seen Slings and Arrows? It is another Canadian show about Shakespear or something. I don't know.
good job on this weeks challenge. Congratulations on making it this far and I look forward to seeing more. keep on going!
Great job guys and congratulations on making it to week 5, looking forward to seeing what week 6 brings. Best of luck
Good concept. Like the videos. Good luck in the next round. Look forward to seeing the next video. Very talented group of people. There are so many talented people out there.
While I don't feel like this has potential to be a comedy, it has potential for a lot more. Congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and I good lucking on making it to the Top 15!!
Curious to see what you guys will do in next week's video. Please, please, PLEASE do a fresh take without Shakespeare.
i like the idea here guys. could've been more hyped by the video but its definitely a good concept. Congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and good luck on making it to the Top 15!!
I absolutely love this idea, you guys are hilarious! Congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and good lucking on making it to the Top 15!!
Hey all , this is the first time I have seen your project, I like the premise and will certainly check out your web series. Good luck in top 15 voting period.
Oh I like the idea around a modern Shakespeare! Has potential... if not for TV maybe as a film. Congrats on getting this far and Good luck with Top 15!
"This one caught my eye out of pure chance and I am super happy that it did! Loved the effort you guys are putting into this! The writing is nice and I can't wait to see what unfolds in the voting process."
Congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and I good lucking on making it to the Top 15!! Shakespear done right, Willy would be proud
Love the modern take on Shakespeare. Could be really good! The pitch is really interesting and I feel like it could be a well developed story. Good luck!
congrats on the top 55! I love the shakespeare, you guys are hilarious and I think your show is definitely the most unique. good luck on making it to the top 15!!
Great video you guys! Lots of great information and backstory! Love the behind the scenes stuff! Good luck on the Top 15 vote guys!
Really intrigued and excited to see what more you come out with, I love the concept and comedy style, and I hope hope hope I remember enough Shakespeare to really "get" everything.
Really interesting concept. The Shakespeare certainly catches my attention and I am sure this will attract a large audience. Good luck with the show.
Ahhhhh, always good to see Will Shake in the mix! Being a university student, I can definitely relate and I think that the idea of your comedy is brilliant! Great job. So congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and good luck on making it to the Top 15!!
Going forward my votes will go to storyline, substance and ability to deliver a sustainable, CBC suitable, comedy series. Curious to see if you can deliver that.
Great concept and I know some folks that have worked on the web series portion that was already worked on, I hope you guys do well!
Not going to lie, I love a good back story. I would love to see the back story of how Shakespeare wrote his best comedy, and I love the idea of him being in university (Although he did drop out of school). University AU are always fun to watch. Good luck!
Congrats on making it into the Top 55! You guys really use your unique material to your advantage. Good luck in the next round of voting guys!
Huzzah! Thank you for answering the week's challenge question so eloquently! Really enjoyed watching your video, and have every week! Best of luck in the vote. (Your posters are still my favourites) :D
A twist on a classic. A cliche comment to be sure, but sue me. Congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and I good lucking on making it to the Top 15!!
I've enjoyed this project from the beginning. Great video! Professional, clear, explains your concept and ComedyCoup itself. Best of luck.
It sounds as though you have been working on this project for quite a while and I hope that in the long run your efforts will be rewarded. I am intrigued by your Shakespeare in a day event and may just pop in to see how it is going!
Love the premise of the show!
I enjoyed how clear you were with the history if your webseries and where you plan to go with the show. Good luck with this weeks voting for top 15.
I hope this makes top 15. I appreciate the history this show has had going on before this competition. Also, I just realized you've got the brains of Ryan Caron behind this project. Lucky duckies.
Great concept, and great explanation in this video. Would have liked to see a sample of the funny.
I don't think a show needs to be funny all the time. I think hooking people in and letting them follow the plot and characters before you go for the laughs is an interesting way to present it.
Consider me and my fellow thespian enjoyers Hyped! This video certainly grabbed my attention, and I look forward to seeing you guys on the other side of the Top 15! Good luck!
Great hype video and congratulations on making the top 55. Can't wait to see what you have planned for your future productions after you make the top 15. Good luck!
I appreciated the factual presentation of what you are trying to do, but I think you missed out on a chance to add some laughs to make the pitch more interesting. Great idea… but I think you undersold it with your delivery.
I appreciate that you are completely putting your concept out on the table for people, but I have to say that it's a far from enticing idea. It's hard to tell if you guys will be funny or not and frankly the humor seems inherently geared towards theatre/english lit nerds and while that may pull in a decent audience, it's not exactly appealing to most people. I think you guys are sincere about the subject matter, but unfortunately for myself, I'm bored just thinking about it. Good luck, though!
Well done. You were concise, sincere, I have a sense of who you are, and I now know exactly what your project is. It's nice to see that diversity is a point of pride with you as well. The only thing I would consider tinkering with is the title of the series.
I really like what you all are doing. Keep it up and best of luck for making the top fifteen!!!!
I now have a way better understanding on what your trying to get produced, the info was great but i don't think you needed to change the voice-over, the female voice was working great. I'm still not quite sold on the idea and you could have provided some laughs in this video, always room for funny. Good luck with your HYPE event Thursday night.
Would've been fun to see a few jokes in the mix with this video too—the concept is kind of interesting but I'm not feeling this as a comedy necessarily, based purely on this mission video.
I think you are really bringing Shakespeare to life... seriously his bones are moving…i don't think he wanted that to happen…you know his epitaph and everything. Like your show. Good luck!
I've been following you because I'm intrigued by the concept of bringing Shakespeare into the present. However, I'm not sure if you are just focusing on one play "A Midsummer Nights Dream" or if you intend to explore others.
For the purpose of Comedy Coup, we've chosen to focus on one iconic play for inspiration and structure. With the webseries we played more diversely, drawing from other plays, one per arc, and whatever future the project has will almost certainly continue to draw upon the rich body of the Shakespeare canon.
I like knowing a bit more of the backstory.. i.e., that it was a web series, makes sense. One thing that still troubles me, (though I am interested and following this project)... is whether it's what I would classify as comedy. It seems like it could also be classified as Shakespeare / Degrassi... and I wouldn't call that comedy. Not that you won't have funny moments... but I'm still not convinced this is the same category that so many other shows are competing for...
Absolutely; we are taking the tag line "New Forms of Funny" to heart and sharing our style. It's a different flavour than many of the other projects in the running, and I'm proud to be part of that variety. Comedy once meant "has a happy ending", usually a wedding; before that it was used to define a genre of mostly biting satire and ironic political commentary. Being the lit nerds we are, we absolutely harken back to those meanings, while also dabbling in the sharp, quick-witted exchanges and absurdism that I love from the genre's modern iterations.
Thanks for giving us a shot; if you want a broader sample to see if our style can peak your interest, you can check out the webseries on Youtube- I would recommend Act 4 if you want to jump right into the laughs. It's where we introduce Burbage...
the video was well executed. I am just not sure if this genre will stand the test of time and interest viewers enough. the sell sheet also has a little too much text.
This is great!
I like the idea of William Shakespeare failing. Everyone does sometimes, probably the old bard too. I was wishing I could hear sound from the background stuff. It looked interesting.
Much of the background footage is from the webseries we released on Youtube last year; you can check it out in it's original form with audio there! Just search for Blankversetv :)
I like that you have females playing male characters! I finally completely understand what your show is about (maybe I should have read those blurbs on the side). I LOVE your event idea, wish I lived in Vancouver so I could attend! Maybe you could broadcast it live on youtube or something for the rest of us!
Maybe a little to much about where you have come from rather than where you are going. A few funny bits, not sure there is enough for me to watch weekly. Good luck.
I thought this clearly captured how your show was unique. The diversity angle makes the historical aspect of your show far more interesting to me. Nice job!
Diversity and queer representation matter so much in the media.
I really like the simplicity of this video. Its cute, entertaining, and gets your message across without being grossly over stimulating. Good work :)
Interesting concept!
A
I thought this video really explained your show quite well, just what the media would need to see. It's also great that you've managed to snag yourselves 3 press articles so far. As for your Thursdays event, I know it's obvious that the time refers to 8:00pm PST, but it wouldn't hurt to throw the PST in there (just in case).
That was pretty funny guys. Nice job on the hype video. A lot of other teams didn't really have any hype of their show itself, just the writers so this was fulfilling the requirement much better.
I would think that a media pitch should feature what makes this show funny first and foremost. This video is a dry account of how the show came to be, not a sales pitch of what it could be.
good job.
I want to see more before I really get it though.
Interesting concept
Great concept! Good luck guys!
