Week #3 The Differentiator North of Normal

For our third challenge, we wanted to give you a glimpse into what 'North of Normal' could look like. With more time and an actual budget, we would explore new ideas for segments and incorporate guest hosts and characters along with a musical element included in each episode. Also check our additional content for more of what our show would look like and how we #BeDifferent. Yo.

I enjoyed it, good life happens comedy, you head out to do one thing and end up doing something else. It is a different idea but good for a sitcom so it seems like a workable idea. Nice snow already so it will pass for canadian humour.

Optional images

Real interviews with the public

Real interviews with the public

With real media experience, the investigative team at North of Normal News Network are ready! We want to hit the streets and talk with people about the issues of the day. We ask all the hard-hitting questions, like "Just how do you like your eggs?" Through real-life interactions with people during their day to day routines, we gain a greater view of what it's like to be a Northerner.

Mocu-mercials galore!

Mocu-mercials galore!

Another of our elements would be fake commercials and infomercials. Fake people fake-selling real fake-goods! These would interlace between sketches, segments and real commercial breaks. In an alternate universe, we could see ourselves selling stuff like this for a living. hell, if this doesn't work out we just might have to.

Guest Characters introducing Sketches

Guest Characters introducing Sketches

We want to have our recurring characters do introductions for sketches, segments and other features during the show. The relationships we have with our characters is mostly positive like with Gay Batman (pictured above). However there are some characters who wish the whole show was about them (Jade French) and we will meet them all very soon.

Special Guest Stars to host the Program

Special Guest Stars to host the Program

We would introduce a weekly guest star who would help us introduce the show, host segments and star in that week's program. The star would be included in the writing process of sketches. Pictured here, is Aklavik born author Tom McLeod. He is a published writer of Children's stories. The sky is the limit with who could host the show. Ideally, North of Normal would be the Premiere sketch outlet in Canada.

Musical segments with different guests

Musical segments with different guests

Every week we would have a musical component to the show, a pre-taped segment with Deuce exploring Canadian music. We would work with artists to produce a short program and interview about their process and why they are entertainers. Pictured here is Friday Face, who DJs local venues in Inuvik, playing for Deuce.

There's plenty of competition, and trying to focus so much comedy into so small an orifice will be very hard to maintain in a multi season series. Will be surprised to see this one in the next round of voting, but talented film makers can still pull it off! Good luck!

i really love the setting, as some of the other commenters have said. there has never been a show on cbc (or anyone, i dont think, except for maybe the dicovery channel) that has showcase this part of canada. i would love to see it for that reason alone. we deserve to get to know this part of our nation. nice work guys.

I would love to see a sitcom that features this part of Canada. I think it would be interesting to see how the storyline would progress, as you would be able to bring in the culture and the cold in a humorous way. Keep up the creativity!

It was a little slow and don't like that the sound wasn't very good. That is the negative, the positive is that you guys are likable and I think that this show is in a different place, talking about different things, doing different jokes in a different style from other entries.

As someone who lives in downtown Toronto i'd really like to back this project as it would reflect a part of the nation that we don't hear much about. I disagree with the earlier comment made about the break in scene bot being funny. Personally, I laughed out loud when the guy came in and asked about the 'level up'. I can so relate to that as my roommates play video games. I didn't really get the wizard puppet part. I think focus more on the funny aspects of life in your town and we will enjoy it more.

Definitely how I would see a true W.o.W player react. The sidetracking I think got a bit much sidetracked here, but I get it nonetheless and I see where it was going. Like your first 2 better.

I am a little confused about your story. Robbing people's houses, being friends with them... I know some shows are just shows and don't make sense, but in this week #3 video, I just don't get it. Good luck; i did like the 2 first ones better.

I love aboriginal humour. It is lovely, expressive and can be quite riddling. First Nations friends of mine love taking English words and twisting them to sound similar to a word in their language - word play. I would like to see the writers making use of this for this project. Mainstream pop culture humour is not what I am looking for in a new CBC comedy series. Nor would I want to see standard pedestrian jokes which are left over or based on previous comedy shows or sketches. I would like to see comedy come from situations involving a food gathering party, hunting party, and other outdoor situations.

Like I mentioned earlier, I think the comedy is very workable and unique with the backdrop of NWT. I hope you guys will show more of your comedy that's influenced from your area. I don't know why, but I am very interested in seeing more of the environment that makes your comedy unique and funny. Plus, I'd definitely pay more attention to your audio. It is always the biggest issue with my project.

It's great that you guys have managed to in the competition so far as you are the only ones from the NWT. I thought the joke about the 2 doors was great. I'm wondering though, will all your sketches be completely different, or will they keep the same characters as so the audience gets a sense of who they are and then have some sort of story to follow? Good luck with the competition guys!
