Week #3 The Differentiator Roll For Damage

R4D uses illustrations in combination with live footage to create a unique comedic experience. The illustrations can accent action and emotion, map time and space, communicate abstract concepts and more. Most importantly, the drawings allow the show to take place within a fantasy realm without the production costs or complications.

Holy crap, WTF!!! I did not expect this at all! Most of the stuff on this site is sketch comedy or just sitcoms. This is so nuts. You guys should get on Reddit with this.

Characters come alive

Characters come alive

Peter's roll as the "dungeon master" has him playing a constantly changing roster of characters. The gang meets an elf? Peter plays the elf. The gang rescues a maiden? Peter plays the maiden. The gang chats up a demon? Peter plays the demon. The use of illustration adds accents to Peter's quick portrayals and helps keep the audience clear on which character is speaking.

Improv

Improv

The celebration sequence in our Mission 3 video is the perfect example of how Roll for Damage incorporates improvisation into its scripts. Improv comedy has an undeniable energy that audiences gravitate toward. We make sure to provide as many improv opportunities as possible for our talented cast.

This isn't a show about

This isn't a show about "nerds"

This is a show about people. The pen and paper role-playing aspect of the show provides a common thread to bind the characters together and allows us to explore aspects of their psychology that would otherwise remain hidden. While our Mission 3 video focused on the characters "in-game," a full episode of Roll For Damage would spend as much time in the "real world" as it would "in-game."

The art matches the concept of D&D (self-created fantasy) and this is a fun, cheap way to bring the characters into another world. And it just looks awesome!

The show's violence is unnecessary and vivid, and the viewer has compassion for the guy who raised the beast, so the other players seem like mean bullies. I like the concept, but the content is disappointing.

This is what D & D is like! It's a mix of improv, a goal and pure hilarity! It's refreshing to see the people playing as themselves and not a s a stereotype from the 70s or 80s. I find most shows that revolve around geek culture seem to be written by bullies who use them as the but of a joke. Thanks for this.

The differentiator video definitely did its job as showing how unique this project is! The production is clearly excellent and the writing/acting quite funny, but I still wonder how this premise would pan out as a weekly series. It feels a bit too much like a good short film.

I like this show; and this style really separates it from the rest of the shows in the competition. I like the 'rooting it in reality' feel of using this as a major driver of the show, and it would be even more awesome if characters almost had their own styles of 'imagination animation' to almost duke it out onscreen or combine to demonstrate the clashing of minds during a D&D session!

    Superb!

As a lot of people are doing, you get on to help out some of your friends who need votes, and poke around in the process just to see if anything good is around. You get a chuckle here and there, but this one really made me laugh a lot. It's true that perhaps you need to be an old nerd to really have it hit you, but I watched a couple of these videos a few times (since the webpage kept not 'processing' that I had actually watched them) to rate them, and it made me laugh the same way each time. The dialogue would work just as well for radio, and adding the sketching overlay, it's priceless.

Awesome. I really want to see this come to fruition.

This is a great premise, and super funny. I love the illustrations. I see this being more of a recurring sketch on a regular show though, rather than a show in itself. I can't really see this lasting for a whole season of 22min episodes. But hey, if you win, good on ya! If not, maybe do a webseries? The format might work better for you.

Excellent idea with excellent execution. This is another of the few ideas I've seen that could sustain a whole series. That being said, I think episodes would need to expand beyond the D&D fairly early. Exploring these characters and their motivations when outside the game would make the game itself that much more interesting.

Based on the "dental floss/cat" cutaway, it seems like these folks are already thinking in that direction.

    Good luck!

This looks like it's gonna be really good, I hope that even if you don't win you continue the series as a low / no budget channel on YouTube. The animations really brings the dialogue to life, I've watch D&D pod casts before and tho the dialogue is funny, there's usually little reason to actually watch it, but the way you are doing it, it's far more entertaining to look at and even tho the video was only short i can easily see it being stretched out into a full 22 min ep.

    Good Luck!

I started out thinking that the concept was ok, but couldn't support more than a couple of episodes. It seems like you guys have a lot of interesting ideas and I'm liking the character's more and more every time I see them. You're selling me on the concept more but I feel like you did not show show me how your show is different aside from the premise, which I already knew about. However, it did feel fairly different as a show so I'm willing to accept a "show don't tell" explanation.

I really appreciate not only the quirky-ness of the drawings but how it helps visually tell the story. You can keep the pace of dialogue quick, because you can overlay the displacer beast on the DM - quickly the viewer knows he's not being silly but providing feedback to his players. Lets the laughs come quick!

Looking forward to finding out how the illustrations get used in 'real life'.

Cannot wait for more real world scenarios as mentioned in the NO 'nerds' description . I enjoyed correlating the cat flossing with the sawing of the displacer beast and was thinking that if you all used RFD illustrations to convey your attitudes towards situations at work, grocery store, dmv, church etc... you would relate even more. I am with you. You guys have serious creative and comedic chops and I am rooting for you. Good luck!

Different - absolutely! 100% the MOST different I have seen in this entire comp!!!!
*However- I'd rather drag a rusty kitchen knife across my own throat, than sit through an entire 30 mins of this. Then again, D&D was never my "thing".

Fair comment, Art. We never intend to produce a show that would only be "in-game." So far we've focused on the drawings and the silliness of pen and paper role-playing because we've been tasked with demonstrating how our project is different. A 30 min ep of Roll For Damage would really spend most of it's time away from the game table. I hope that we get to show off that aspect of the show in future missions.

Guys! The latest video is super cool! The improv aspect is different, the drawing aspect is different, the whole concept of the show is different. And different equals great!

You guys consistently make me laugh, but I'm always aware I know nothing about this world except what you tell me. I'm not totally sure where you're going but I like the different ness and maybe just want an access point so I don't feel so alien.

I'm really enjoying the work thus far, especially the graphic artistry on the live characters.

    Great stuff!

This is an excellent comment. Thanks so much for the feedback. What you're referring to is our show's number one challenge, most def. Our pilot episode introduces a new character to the group who has never played this type of game before and we hope that as they learn about the game, so will the audience. Again, thanks for watching and commenting!

Fantastic dispatch of a displacer beast, they are abominations! Raising displacer beasts is a crime against the crown.
