Week #3 The Differentiator Scratch Tracks

Wow, 4 differentiators. 1. Set in a recording studio, the music rocks & drives plot. 2. 60’s flowerchild gone to seed is overdue & so out, she’s back in with free-love, weed and old music. 3. Fish-out-of-water failed LA music producer who retreated to his Canadian hometown. 4. Each episode is an entry in studio intern Bridget’s secret “vlog”. Tri-generations nurtures endless comedic conflict.

Hey…fellow Nova Scotian in the room. You guys are great. I had no idea there was a studio in shelburne…but now I know where I want to record my next comedy album. Great stuff! Here's to being there in the top 50…good luck!

Optional images

Bridget making her video diary.

Bridget making her video diary.

DIFFERENTIATOR 1, Bridget's Video Diary is the narration technique for this sitcom concept. It's a secret, locked diary like most teen diaries, and the tomboy Bridget protects her secret thoughts with her fists. As a narrator, Bridget provides a semi-naïve view into the triangular, 3-generational relationship of Music Producer Nathan, Grandmother and Teen Intern. (BTW, we could use some money to hire a permanent Bridget.)

Natalie Lynn & shoort for Differentiator

DIFFERENTIATOR 2, some episodes of Scratch Tracks the sitcom will feature awesome music, sometimes driving the plot, sometimes just for fun. No one has ever set a sitcom in a recording studio. This is a shot of Garrett Van Buskirk, Ryan Perry and Natalie Lynn in the studio on the shoot for the Differentiator, Mission 3.

Submission to

Submission to "Day in the Life NS"

"Day in the Life NS" is a CBC project to collect pics and videos that chronicles life in Nova Scotia on October 17, 2014. We submitted a short video about what we were doing on that day, shooting the Differentiator video for Comedy Coup. We hope to attract attention to our project when our video is made part of a montage for this project and broadcast on CBC.

Differentiator 3 & 4, Nathan & Grandma

Differentiator 3 & 4, Nathan & Grandma

DIFFERENTIATOR 3, Nathan Williams is a music producer who's failed out of the big time LA/NYC scene and retreated back home to revive his starter studio in his Grandma's. basement. DIFFERENTIATOR 4, Grandma Williams is the original flower child-gone-to-seed whose antique beliefs are back in favour - free love, marijuana (as often medicinally applied as recreationally employed) and the classic music of her youth as inspiration for Nathan's clients - sex, drugs and rock n roll.

I like the Nathan character. He is very plausible and can be subjected to many humorous events.
Not only with Grandma being so darn hip, but Bridget who is very cute but needs to get out her bedroom. Lots of pranks in the studio and outside scenes could be happening out on the wharf.
Guys could be recorded singing ole time songs while casting (fishing) for Mackerel off the wharf.
Recording of old kids rhymes like row row row your boat merrily merrily merrily all along da wharf.
Or having a group of kids trying tongue twisters before going in to record a song.
I'm not a writer, but I have funny ideas. I sure hope to see this Scratch Tracks show happen.

So far so good. Creative, funky, cast of characters and story lines. Great music - hope t hear some variety as the show develops. The music clip occupied some 52 seconds of the audio and video portion of a 140 second comedy clip. Undoubtedly the music contributes to the story but there may be a trade off with using more of the scarce time for comedy... just asking? Want to encourage you all. This is great fun.

Love the way the pathos and comedy are intertwined with individual dreams, societies preconceptions and each individuals personal journey; Grandma totally at home in her skin in all ways, the struggle [ and humour ] of the lead - did 'he ' fail ' in an artificial world ? Or is success about happiness within? The Vlogger who is the conscious observer representing her own views and acting as the collective viewer perhaps. This has characters you love, you recognize, you can empathize with and wince at. Having the potential to spin in so many directions, seriously raising questions about societies artificial values whilst presenting a totally watchable, enjoyable and entertaining program. The addition of real live, unique music, acting as a showcase is pure genius and another delight for the senses LOVE IT.

Thanks Ryan. We're all about story & character. We think of our pitch as a classic sitcom with several new angles. So glad you noticed what we're after - character, story and the best soundtracks anywhere.
