The Stuff of Things is a documentary series that explores science, the natural world, 'n stuff...
View ProjectWhat makes The Stuff of Things different than everything else on television? We ask the questions no one else is asking.
Fave 35 Views 502I think this would make a great weekly show I love the"dry" humour & the simply ridiculous questions explored with a straight face!

"Fresh" is how I'd describe the Stuff of Things. I like that it's a sort of parallel to Nature of Things and has a bit of cerebral humour to it. I also totally like the blood bit. Now that's comedy. Good Luck!
I have really enjoyed your challenges so far. Seems like a really interesting, funny idea for a show! Reminds me of This is That on CBC Radio.
good job this week guys! this show looks very entertaining and different and exciting! I look forward to seeing more in the coming weeks and what will be next. Keep on truckin!
good job this week. the image for this weeks challenge alone made me click on it! This shows nicely how your show will be different and unique. Keep going!
I loved everything right up until the 'blood' scene ……. at which time I got freaked out. My imagination ran away with me (pun intended). Can't get that image out of my mind. Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I've got a phobia for anything needle related.
Great sounds and very visually pleasing, I was however not sure if the questions being asked were seriously going to be answered or part of a joke, which got me more intrigued! I'm excited to learn some wacky facts :)
There's something very enjoyable about seeing a parody of scientific shows, especially those done with a straight face and a dedication to the joke. It's like a tabloid science magazine, but with moving pictures and also not a magazine.
Not really funny. David Suzuki has worked for years on CBC to promote environmental awareness...I don't think CBC would be interested in a show that pokes fun at it.
looking forward to seeing more.
Some interesting questions posed here, I would love to see some of them answered. If nothing else, it is fun to see what kind of insane questions you can come up with next. Hope to see you in the next round.
Looks great. I would love to watch this on CBC, but will settle for a web series if all else fails. It looks funny though, and I hope you win!
Not a lot of yuk-yuks in this clip, but the video is beautiful. Lovely colour. Interesting format. Too bad I don't get a sense of where the humour will happen.
This is a cool concept for a show. It does for science what the colbert does for politics. A show like this could go really far with strong writing. If it doesn't work for TV I think it would kill as a web series. Good luck!
Great work guys! Keep it up! You got some awesome content and I can't wait to see more! I really hope that you make it to the next round and hey maybe even all the way if you're lucky!
I like the videos and I like the humour. I get tired of the format of the nature of things even for a documentary so Im not sure I could keep up with that show and keep up with this one as well....might lose interest.
I really liked this video, I am able to relate and you guys are pretty funny! The camera angles are great and I am really interested to see where you go with this in your next video.
I love the presentation. I think the humour could be boosted by more questions that people can relate to--I thought the "where are everyone's keys" was a good example of this. Good luck!
I think that this is a really cool idea and i think that it would make a great series. This would also reach a lot of different people of different age groups! well thought out and I'm impressed!
Wow I'm very impressed with some of your shots. The show looks great. A comedic documentary is a very compelling idea. I'd like to see more. I also enjoyed the spoof of the name: The Nature of Things vs. The Stuff of Things. We went for the same approach with Ranger Bay (Danger Bay). Good luck in making the top 50!!! ...and socks...where is that black hole of socks?!?
Maybe everyone's keys - ARE INSIDE THE BAG!
(You know, the bag that comprises the entire universe. The, uh, one you held up near the end. It'd be one of those "twist endings" that are so popular these days. Ahem.)
The concept is quite interesting and I see the potential for captivating people's attention - I really hope you have an episode to track down that black hole of missing socks!
Not sure where this goes, - the questions are great - I guess it depends on how the "answers" are handles
I like all of it. i think that what you have is great. I would love to see more and I am very curious how this could be a series. Whoever you have doing camerawork is great and I support you!
I agree with Darcy's comment below, and you won me over with the comment, well done! I am actually very curious to know where everyone's keys are! Thanks for this, hoping it is a harmonious marriage!
super intrigued
Super thank you.
This could be really good or really bad. I'm just not convinced that this falls into the former. As someone who LOVES documentaries I'm intrigued at the possibility of a documentary/comedy high-bred. The danger is you are now tackling two very difficult genres. Will this marriage work?
My own love for both comedy and documentary is part of what makes me love being involved in this project. But like all marriages, we should stay together for the kids.
One of the few projects I've seen that would actually work as a half-hour show. Could have easily been super dull but the surrealist questions and deadpan delivery really work!
Your confidence in our concept is great to hear! Though we think of them as realist questions.
This looks great! I love the funny questions presented in a very serious way. It's like "the onion" of shows.
Wait until you see our episode about onions: "ONIONS: Nature's Apples"
East Coast votes STUFFED and sent!!!!!!
Thanks... stranger.
Very convincing as a documentary show, I like it.
As long as we're convincing as "a show", we'll take it. Thanks!
I really enjoyed the music in the background ..your pacing was good...some good moments and your camera work is great
Nice Job! Really great and amazing direction and camera work. Seriously i like it a lot. You people have talent. Loads of it. I think this would be an awesome show for the Canadian broadcasting corporation.
This show is perfect for the CBC. I can totally see this being made and being a hit. Here is hoping you guys make this through to the top 50!
Love this, love how extremely Canadian it is, and definitely looking forward to more. Good luck going into the Top 50 voting, guys!
Even more, we were listening to Anne Murray the entire time that we made this, start to finish. Thanks!!!
I really want to see this happen. I love the straight faced take on ridiculous subjects. And I need these questions answered!!!
We're here to help you!!!
(nobody tell him about Google!)
Not sure I 100% get this concept but I think it will be interesting to see a new take on comedic documentary shows. Could be interesting. Good luck!
I second this, I'm definitely curious to see more. Good luck!
I think this would make a great weekly show I love the"dry" humour & the simply ridiculous questions explored with a straight face!
Kudos to the "Stuff of Things" team for creative use of stock footage which will save money for the CBC down the road when they are producing your show. Very sophisticated screen play!! Just the right pacing for my level of concentration cuz I like to feel that I'm "getting it".
The doctors say our "dry, straight faced" humour comes from an inability to feel emotions or empathy.
Thanks for watching!
I like what i saw and what i heard, i just don't know how it fits in with Comedy Coup. Some of the stuff you brought up I would have never thought of like a car running on blood... great thinking... but how do you bring this to fit in? I see it in a documentary, but on comedy... not sure. Good luck though!
Guys, I second this.
You concept is definitely creative and a series can easily be made as there are so many directions you can take it. I'm just wondering if this is something people really want to watch on TV? I feel that people enjoy learning about new things and finding out new interesting information (like from shows such as The Nature of Things or How it's Made) but would they sit down to a show that is a mockumentary style and really isn't telling them anything factual at all? Good luck in the competition!
Thank you for your feedback, Christina. In the long run, we see the series as a source for not only absurdity, but also satire. We hope that what will keep people coming back both for the laughs and the satisfaction of looking at something in a different way. Also, How It's Made is a great show.
But are there some questions that shouldn't be asked? Is there no line that The Stuff of Things is unwilling to cross? It's a slippery slope from Dolphin Swearing to Crustacean Pornography, and nobody wants to see that.
Yes... Nobody wants to see that...
(deletes hard drive)
I thought I wanted to see it, but there are just some things you just can't unwatch. http://vimeo.com/11089490
i agree, the stuff of things is a funny project, and i think it has many potentials if it is executed right, i will keep following your project and best of luck !
Thanks for checking us out! To make sure we get the execution right, we are consulting with a professional executioner.
LOVE IT! Boldly going where David Suzuki was on the fence about going to. Always wondered about those biker dudes and dolphins ;-)
Thanks! We've wondered a lot about David Suzuki.
Seeing as the CBC takes The Nature of Things very seriously, I don't think they would be interested in green lighting something like this, but good luck!
Our hope is that they just don't notice the difference.
Great answer to the week's challenge. Lots of great questions being asked here (stupid jerk dolphins!). The blood legit creeped me out. Looking forward to more!
Just wanted to ask you, honestly, would a car that runs on farts be funnier than a car that runs on blood?
Thanks! If this doesn't work out, we'll retool it for CreepyCoup next year.
I like this so far -- The Stuff of Things is funny and aims for a higher level of comedy writing, plus it's lleaning on a parody of a Canadian classic, not just Canadian stereotypes. Week #1 is a great example of what it's aiming for -- I hope you get the chance to go farther!
Thanks a lot, man! We also hope for that.
No, seriously. Have you seen them? My keys were just by the door...
If you can find the answer to where all lost keys/socks go, I will personally give you the $500,000 I've lost. Which I assume is also with my keys and socks.
Purgatory.
Money, please!
haha the car running on blood joke is gold.
Thank you! Red gold!
It's also quite painful.
Cute - good use of Cosmos-y production values. :D
Yes... "production values"...
Thanks Erin!
Gee, I want to know that stuff too, about things. And stuff. Are dolphins swearing at us? They're definitely laughing at us, slimy cute douchebags!
Little known fact: The dolphin who played Flipper was arrested numerous times on obscenity charges.
Definitely asking the questions no one is asking, but now we're all asking!
Thanks for asking!
(NOTE: Answers not guaranteed)
I just discovered your project and it looks good! Sort of Mythbustersy which is cool. This could definitely be a tv show in that none of the episodes have to relate to each other. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thanks for checking it out! Though I assure you, the growing menace of dolphin profanity is no myth!
The world is full of stuff. And things. We need The Stuff of Things to understand the knowledge that cannot be learned. Or something.
"...to understand the knowledge that cannot be learned. Or something."
How did you get a hold of The Stuff Of Things' Mission Statement?
I hadn't seen your project up until now, but I really like what you've done with the unique style. This is a documentary for which I might be able to stay awake.
Thanks very much! Unfortunately our next episode is titled "The Science Of Soothing Music And Sleepytime Tea".
