With all the downsizing the CBC is down to just 3 guys, who are now responsible for all programming.
View ProjectThe Cutbacks Educational Consortium presents: Differentiation and Me and You! Jimmy and Emily learn a lot about something or other, or maybe they don't. Special thanks to Sarah Troyer for being funny!
Fave 29 Views 690This is one of the funniest videos from the last week. It looks like a tight race for sketch shows but I would put The Cutbacks as one of the front runners. Great work!

Hmmm. Yes, this is fresher and funnier than your week #1 video was. The concept had felt almost too tailored to the contest - almost like pandering. Buutt... has potential.
Quite the competition from the east to the west coast and such an excellent group of participants makes it hard to pick just 15. I hope CBC gives you each a coffee mug or something for getting to the top 55. Best wishes to all.
Well the final hours of the vote to get to the next level are approaching now so it is up to the voters now to get you there. Best wishes to you for success and nice work on getting through to the top 55 for all those able who were able to get that far.
This format kicks ass. I love that the actors were inaudible and got to showcase their physical acting talent. The expressions and illustrations made for some pretty great moments (SCTV, the pile of shit, cam 2 being X'ed-out -- god I love clever callbacks). I can also really identify with the character Jimmy; Emily doesn't want to nail me, either.
Way to go on your comedy coup efforts to date. You have succeeded in making it to the top 55 and that is something to be proud of. Already the competition is getting tough as the quality of the competitors gets refined. Best wishes for making it to the next level.
This is really clever. It's a great premise, and all the videos I've seen so far have made me laugh. The SCTV gag made me laugh out loud.
This was a really clever way to get across what's different about this show (love that you made a joke about why the sketch show has so few actors) and also create a funny clip.
I don't know if I appreciate the humour here. Maybe it's just me, but you seem to be being mean to that girl a lot, and that's not very nice!! I think that you should be more respectful to her. Especially in the wake of this horrible Gomeshi affair!!!
Like the concept very well put togeather. You guys are exceptionally funny .Got the picture right away.Good luck in the top 15.Cheers.
Really great use of technology both in the filming and voting processes! Your social media sites look outstanding and I hope that the show goes somewhere no matter what the viewers may vote! Future is very bright for the many people dedicated to this project!
This didn't really get the point across to me. It's different because it's cheap? That could be said of everything on here at this point. The irony is that if you were to get the prize, then a lot of money would have to be spent to make it professionally cheap, which is just one of those many things about television/film that's weird.
Good job on this week's challenge. Good luck in the remainder of the competition. You have a funny concept here and hope you make it through the next round! Cheers!
I think it is great that you have this opportunity and I wish you the best of luck as you go along. I appreciate the effort you have put forth so far.
I like this show. Comedy timing is on par. Super proud to know this and Maple U are teams from Alberta! Thats what we need more of! Wish you the best!
Haha amazing stuff guys. I like all the characters, perfectly cast if you ask me. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this project for sure, very unique to all the other projects. The posters are amazing too, really gives us a good glimpse of what to expect! Just wondering how far this story can go, definitely something to look forward!!
Grate video. Concept original. Je n'ai pas tout compris, mais vous m'avez bien fait rire ! Surtout le dude à lunette ; ) Bonne chance, Rafaëlle
I found this video to be boring
I'm sorry you feel that way. Evidently punctuation bores you as well.
I didn't think I'd like this series but it has grown on me. This was one of my favourite differentiator videos. Funny concept, well executed. Good acting. Good work.
Yay!! A good sketch show!! Let's cutback on everything other than these three gentleman right here! Get it?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
I really like the approach you took to this video, it definitely stood out! Super funny idea, and I'm super excited to see what comes next! Good luck in the top 15 voting!
Came across this show completely by accident, happy accident you could say. Loved the SCTV gag. Laughed a number of times throughout this week’s video. Looks like there’s some real promise here but something does seem to be missing from making this a really great show.
SCTV well done. I like your taking a shot at CBC and Canadian film making as being Cheap. With the way you named your group it does make your concept make sense but satirical humor was a bit deep for the slap stick crowd.
I loved the dry humour, and I actually laughed out loud at the "All Canadian TV show are sh*tty". I love the manically smiling obsessed boy, and the pipe.
I loved the dry humour, and I actually laughed out loud at the "All Canadian TV show are shitty". I love the manically smiling obsessed boy, and the pipe.
SCTV - hilarious! This is exactly right - you've highlighted perfectly what makes you stand out and why you're a show to watch, plus made me laugh. Three cheers all around.
I really enjoyed the way you used the style of the video to create a great contrast to the language and topics discussed. Keep it up guys!
Love the the viewpoints on canadian television and as always being critical of cbc in a comedy thats in a contest hosted by cbc is golden. good work guys.
Being a fan of the CBC, I don't quite condone showing them in such a way, but at the same time, this is a pretty clever look "behind the scenes", so to speak. Keep it going!
I love the approach of a relevant theme, maybe you guys should focus more on getting it out there because it definitely deserves a higher position on the roster.
This made me laugh so hard! Great work you guys! I can't wait to see where this goes! You guys deserve it!
I like the style of this video! That last joke about bike cops cracked me up. I can clearly see the satirical angle you guys took, so good job! I would definitely watch more.
This project is very funny and I cant wait to see where it goes! Good luck guys, you really deserve it, I hope the popularity picks up, for you guys deserve it.
This is pretty cool and I'm excited to see where this goes!! Cannot wait to see more from this project
I'm loving the content you guys are putting forward in this video, and Congrats on making it to the Top 55. There is so much talent to appreciate here in acting, filming and writing. Best wishes to all involved!
Very clever, multilayered and funny!
I love the teacher student way of explaining differentiate.
You really got a lot into a short time, and it was all fun.
Hysterical!
LOL, nice job on the week 3 entry, can't wait to see more, good luck, keep the funny coming
Hi there! Congratulations on making top 55! I really enjoyed your approach to the week three challenge. I think you answered the question while making me laugh.
Well done!!
Congrats on the top 55. Great video!
Very cheeky! There is definitely promise here. Cool approach on the challenge. There are a lot of sketch shows in the top 110 but I appreciate that you embrace cheapness. Honest!
Cutbacks showed great promise, but I feel the premise of this video confuses the premise of the overall series a little. Still, it was nice seeing a new face in the group, having her brought a different dynamic. It also, however, brought to light that a series entirely featuring only three dudes as the premise might grow stale. Then again, Wayne & Schuster did it with only two for like a good half of Canadian media history.
To be fair, we never imagined limiting The Cutbacks to just "three dudes", but that was the core group that got the project moving. We imagine the cast doubling in size, at least- if we ever get money... Do you have any money you can lend us? We'll probably pay it back.
Very unique and interesting. It may be a bit out there but I think that's what makes it worth watching... I'm curious to see what will come next. Good luck!
A bit absurd. Worth a watch. Grabs your attention in a unique way. It has endless opportunities for entertaining storylines.
no. just no. The simpsons already did it. Southpark already did it. its tough to back up something when its completely stolen from somewhere else. You're using CBC name to generate more likes and hopefully more views. Family guy did a similar sketch before too. No inkling of originality in this group.
Great work guys! Keep it up! You got some awesome content and I can't wait to see more! I really hope that you make it to the next round and hey maybe even all the way if you're lucky!
Lots of potential here. I am curious about how it is developed
Funniest week 3 video I've seen! All 3 of your videos have been hilarious! I just really enjoy the idea for this and the potential comedy that can come from it!
I wish Mr. Bailey were my teacher. I like his drinking and go f*** yourself attitude. Seriously funny week 3 video. But after having a great week 1 and 2 I should have expected that. Keep it up I love it.
Funny stuff and terrifyingly precognitive...oops, that's a pretty big word
I liked your week three teaser. I am not sure where this will go week to week. Do you have enough content? Referencing other shows, although very well done, is that allowed?
I loved the narration and style of this video - very funny! I also like that you are embracing the "low budget" aspect and are using that as part of the humor as well. Looking forward to seeing more!
Haha, what? --This concept seems interesting to me! I hope this goes places.
Your 3rd video was the best of your entries so far, keep at'r
Haha! I like the concept, and what you guys did with week three. It’s witty and informative! I really enjoyed the teaser as well. I don’t know if it would really work as a full show on CBC, but I found it funny and rich in ideas and talent! If your coup fails here, it won’t elsewhere! Keep up the good work!
I love this! I'm in full support of anything that will be a modern version of SCTV ;)
got lots of potential for sure... this week 3 video isnt the best, but its a really cool idea... i think this could go far, for sure... if the CBC is willing to make fun of itself!
Lots of work goes into making the attempt but at the end of the day it has to be funny for a number of weeks for enough people to get ratings and make money. I prefer others.
I thought this video was really funny! I think this would be a funny premise for a tv show. Good luck!!!
This was the funniest by far. Great acting and good concept but yes, as others have said, what would a whole show look like?
Well, the idea is that it would look like a sketch show that is wrapped in a delicious tortilla of a sit-com that occurs at the savagely cut back CBC. Imagine Phillip sitting down at the weekly staff meeting, discovering there is some kind of problem, and while that gets solved, sketches !
I do not think I could watch a show that was so low budget that toys are stand in for actors. I find this aspect very much like kids programing. I like the concept of highlighting the cutbacks in CBC. This also mirrors the cutbacks that are happening in every work place across the nation in the new economy so it would appeal to alot of people. I do wish that it had more than one person speaking ( third video) or one person singing ( second video). It has to be dressed up more to hold my attention. Good luck to you for your project.
Cut to only 3 people left, i know that situation is bad but wow. XD
Anyways, good job and i loved the week 2 video.
Hey guys - this is pretty funny stuff. It's clever, and my type of humour. Great acting in the week three video, and I really liked the SCTV acronym bit! Best of luck...
Of the sketch shows in this competition I think this one is my favourite. The writing is clever, and funny, and I believe you guys could pull it off. I only wish this competition allowed us to see more of your sketches - it's hard for me to imagine what a full show would look like.
We'd love to do more sketches too, to give you a sense of how the show would function. Hopefully that's coming soon!
This is by far the best series I've seen in the competition and Sarah Troyer is a babe! I used all my votes for The Cutbacks this week;)
Some good acting going on. Great use of facial expression...script was funny and like a five year old when you pointed to the poop I had a lol moment :)
Haha, awesome
This is one of the funniest videos from the last week. It looks like a tight race for sketch shows but I would put The Cutbacks as one of the front runners. Great work!
Brilliant... I feel educated, what kind of wine was that? ;)
Great work on week three. And that narrator has a great voice it is almost as if he could teach elementary school. Go cutbacks!
Your funny blondy
I enjoyed this video greatly. I also really enjoyed the drinking game I made for it where every time I see a drink, I take a drink. All in all I really liekd it. plus Ists a really good gamesa guysss; wes hould all play toghethr soon!
I can see that you may have the content to go week to week; however, it may be difficult to keep up the pace. You have filled your teasers with a lot of content and how much is there out there? Are you going to have the material to keep going in this fashion? Good luck.
Yup. very Canadian, and you showed how you would be different. Will keep watching future videos, good luck
Intelligent, hilarious, clearly Canadian comedy. I would love to see more of this and get a sense of how The Cutbacks does address diversity in our self-dubbed multicultural nation. How did you manage to fit subtlety into something so seemingly blatant as a lesson on why The Cutbacks is different? Great video.
I like it. You made me laugh. However, I'd like to learn more about how this would make a great addition to CBC TV. I look forward to your next submissions. Good luck!
Very creative way to show how you are different from the crowd. Your material is funny, but I'm just wondering what potential this has in being made into a series. Will you be able to multiple funny episodes? Will the sketches relate or each episode be very different from the next with a whole group of new characters? I'm curious where you plan on taking this. Good luck in the competition!
Hi Christina.
The Cutbacks is, by and large a sketch comedy show.I say by and large because it will also feature recurring characters and storylines. Think of it like a Smartie or an M & M. The sit com about a struggling severely cut back CBC is the crunchy candy coating surrounding the sketches, which are the delicious chocolate and/or peanut centrer, Although the sketches will be different each week, there will be a storyline featuring the CBC characters woven throughout the episodes. I hope this answers your question, and thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I like the layup and premise of the show. I found it quite witty, I was disappointed at the end when vulgar language was relied on for a laugh.
I like the premise of the show. Everyone can relate to cutbacks. I like the characters. Very funny joke
about SCTV. Looks like a well thought out show. Can't wait to see what happens next week.
Really funny!! Cute cinematography, good writing and witty. Definitely looking forward to the upcoming weeks. Nicely done.
haha Bike Cops gag was the best, great work on the video. Won't be surprised if this get's pro's pick. Look forward to seeing what you guys do next.
Thanks very much!
This is great comedy. Keep it up 'cause you deserve to be in the top group and we need shows like this to shine a light on reality - with true Canadian humour. Love it
SCTV is the greatest visual gag I've seen in any of the projects. Kudos.
Very funny! I like this show, it could end up having a Canadian 30Rock feel, so it's got my vote. Thanks for the Bike Cops shoutout, we appreciate it!
We hoped you'd laugh at that...
Terrifically funny using the classroom setting to explain what sets The Cutbacks apart! Loved the SCTV bit. Great comedic acting. But I'm confused... isn't that my Grade Nine math teacher?
Thanks for the laugh, from a Bike Cops mom.
Oh my god, that was my grade 9 math teacher too!
Great job guys! Seriously honoured you mentioned Bike Cops:) Looking forward to seeing more!
Funny and educational!
You blew the budget.
smart!! SCTV! Love it! Go **** who?? hah! Just keep going!
So much fun to be part of and so great to see!
Holy crap, that just made me laugh out loud! A lot.
SCTV, Venn diagram, poop, diversity (???), OU812! All of it FTW!
Thanks!
Thanks, we wanted to test to make sure the Venn diagram was indeed the funniest type of diagram. Mission accomplished? We think so.
This feels like the rap battle at the end of 8 mile when Eminem points out all possible objections to his opponent, therefore weakening them. Except super different. But the drunken teacher reminds me of Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Minds... But you know different. Basically super urban, but without the young black males.
Nice job! I like the editing and the dialogue was really funny! I love the teacher with the wine- it's hilarious!
