"The Lease" is a mockumentary set in St. John's, NL. When Ryan, a hopeless romantic, surprises his girlfriend with a new house, she bails and leaves him with a hefty mortgage. Upset and drunk on caesars, he turns to the computer and writes an ad: "Searching For Roommates To Fill Void Left By Awful Wench". Pretty soon, he has three complete strangers knocking on his door and into his life.

Synopsis

The story starts with Ryan Grant, an uptight accountant (and closet cartoonist) who has just purchased his first home for he and his long time girlfriend to move into. After his elaborate and very public proposal gets rejected and goes viral online, Ryan is humiliated, heartbroken, and stuck with a mortgage he can't afford.

Depressed and quickly going broke, Ryan posts an ad online to secure three random roommates: Jana Mclean (an aspiring lawyer and reluctant bartender who is secretly a lesbian), Kenny Lemons (a semi-pro hockey player with a head of rocks and a heart of gold), and Ashley Peters (hermit, pot dealer, and the most financially successful of the bunch).

Some clips to introduce the show to someone who hasn't watched the previous videos would have been better than just sitting and talking about it.

I actually find the storyline believable. Its about people that have to live together, not by choice, but necessity.

Another show about Roommates! I guess if you have interesting characters it will carry. The slogan of your poster added some interest to find out why they are not friends. Now I am.

It's a concept that's been done (quirky roommates living together) but I like these people. Especially the guy who can't read. It could be funny.

The comedic recipe is absolutely solid. A heart-broken sap, a no-nonsense female to maybe-sorta-one-day fill the void, a doofus, and a financially successful pot dealer. I need, NEED to see where this goes!

My main complaint is that this is a very average concept. 4 people living in a house mockumentary? I'm not sure this is going to turn many heads.

BEST. CONCEPT.

I got the feeling that you guys are in it to win it, because you've looked beyond the easy "let's get $500,000 to make a half-hour show' and saw the "let's get $500,000 to make a half-hour pilot with national Canadian exposure". Keep your editor - the teaser is well-put together and establishes the show in a fluid manner. The 'desperate lease' is a great way to get dynamic characters into the same social sphere and binds them with clear-cut and concrete rules which will define them later. The weed-dealer character alone could give a great second episode if the 'falling for the unknown-lesbian' is the pilot angle; our serial monogamist could be oblivious to the weed and think people who may show up may be her clients in another sense with everyone else hamming it up for him.

Of all the videos I have watched so far, this is the only one that has a sense of it going anywhere beyond a short means to do a quick character/or exhaust a hard-to-produce premise in a longer sense. Beyond that; it's not sketch comedy which is going to be stiff competition in this not-a-contest. You guys were thinking smart. Also, the premise doesn't necessarily hinge on it being distinctly 'Newfie' - which I think is a credit. Nobody likes being punched in the face with reminders of where a show is set; but it can work its way in naturally (which should give it a broader appeal to other voters in other provinces). And the one-year lease premise gives it a 'per-season' vibe, so a season/lease ending need not feel weird if the show only does a season or two (but hopefully it'll get six and a movie).

Honestly, I think you guys have something special here and I really hope it makes it to the end or wins; otherwise you could already be on the way to a really great pilot to sell to another network. I could probably keep going on for days, but this has unlimited potential for beyond this pilot.

Classic Archetypes comingling? Sounds "situational" enough for me! Especially if there will be a lot more shots that are funny solely based on context. Love these guys, do want more!

This show has the potential to make it. The product of some of St. John's best comedic talents was inevitable. Now that it's finally here I'm impressed. The characters each have unique struggles, even illiteracy, it's ok, we've all been there. That captures the essence of what comedy is though, just a group of people with problems living in the same place, and learning how to deal with each other. I can't wait for more from these fine folks! Keep the gold coming!
