Week #3 The Differentiator Welcome To Tulip

If it wasn't obvious already, Welcome To Tulip's characters are what set it apart. We're following our gut and going all out with these brazen folks. That's right, ALL OUT.

This was easily the strongest and best produced Week 3 video that I've watched. Way to go guys, I'm looking forward to what the next 7 weeks has in store from you two!!

TAKE OVER

TAKE OVER

Don't worry! We all sat down after this, had ourselves a debrief and came to some stiff contractual agreements that will bring some much needed stability to the TV creation process. One stipulation is for stronger foam backings; which would help them refrain from snapping (figuratively and literally). We complied...or else...well, you don't want to know (okay yes you do, think: bathtub+liquid nitrogen+crazy helpful psycho human). If you LOVE these nut bars feel free to share this PHOTO! Yup, right below there's a little SHARE icon that can do magical things for the little town of Tulip. Do it.

GET CREATIVE

GET CREATIVE

Stick it here, poke it there...we've all gotten innovative with hiding stuff on our bodies. Contraband or otherwise. It all starts with a little playfulness. And that's the key: our ability to play. We're never stuck in one place, with one idea, one funny line --we want to push into all possibilities. If something doesn't work: we move on. When something does work: we put on our dirty overalls and buff it until it shines. Do you want to help let the lights glisten on 'Welcome to Tulip'? Share this photo and pass along the turkey.

THE HUSTLE

THE HUSTLE

Every week we're working overtime in order to get our show the OUTRAGEOUSLY AWESOME opportunity to have a 1/2 hour special on CBC. Trust me, that yawn Holly's sporting is not from boredom. It's from working like a giddy banshee to make sure that every week you are blown away by what 'Welcome to Tulip' is creating and accomplishing. Plus fans, we're currently working on the PILOT script and SHOW BIBLE. How kook-a-ma-balls is that? SHARE this photo if you think our hard work is worth it!

SILENCE OF THE TULIP

SILENCE OF THE TULIP

Even though we're an eccentric town, we do believe in a little bit of subtly. That's why this week we kept it simple with a spark. There's a voice in the details. When all the gags & crazy happenstances are put aside, what exists at the core of this show? PEOPLE who are weirdly wonderful, that's what! There will be moments in our show that are outrageous and whacked out. There will be others that feel like a well-hidden whoopee cushion. Within them all is life...A WHOLE LOT OF UNEXPECTED LIFE. We're dreaming big and starting small. Much like the community of Tulip. Love that? Share this photo!

I love seeing Chemainus again! I like the bouncing back and forth between the set model and the real. But I must admit some of the early cutting was too fast for me. As was the delivery of the text. I so visual that I had to watch it three times to hear the clever writing clearly. Maybe that is just a symptom of middle age pacing, but I want to mention it in case others may miss something too in the frenetic. You know what I would be curious to see? A story of a patron who was surprisingly moved because an actor had a courageous/hilarious break-through moment out of a secret adversity. Just a thought.

Good answer Holly! What she said.

    Holly's Photo
    Holly P. 8  posted 10 years ago

Great question Forman. We set this in Alberta because the town that inspired this project is Rosebud, Alberta. All of us three creators lived there for a time. We have a strong tie to the province and believe it is a massively beautiful playground. We do believe there is a lot of provinces that Tulip could reside in. However, we feel that speaking from what we know is stronger than speaking from what we don't. All three of us know Alberta well, so we felt it was appropriate as the creators to allow us all to have an equality of understanding about the region. Especially, as location is a huge element to our story. After all, think of our title. Also, who doesn't love the prairie fields filled with hope? After the rain there is always new growth. It is thematically appropriate. Brilliant question! Hope this answer helps.

The video had good pacing and the character cut outs was neat little visual but I don't feel like just describing the characters is enough to explain how the show itself is different from others

    Giovanni's Photo
    Giovanni M. 7  posted 10 years ago

Hi Marilyn. Thank you for your comment. The reason we spoke about the characters and who they were was to give depth to each individual person and enrich the complexity of their relationships. Although perhaps a few of the other entries may have a new "format" (although there's nothing truly new under the sun) ours is a straight-up-fast-paced-handheld-single-camera comedy series. We're not reinventing the wheel. But our characters are fleshed out relatable people and we strongly feel that IS what makes us different. I hope you can understand why we spoke into that.

I have to admit that I've seen some pretty kick-ass projects on Comedy Coup, I almost wish I could get a TV channel that would air 80% of what I've seen so fart. I have 20 votes, and I am torn between what show I should vote for!

So... I've spent all 20 of my votes on Welcome to Tulip. I love so many of these shows, but this is the one I want to see the very most! I couldn't help it, I feel guilty for not voting for some great projects, but I don't feel guilty for going all in on "Welcome to Tulip!"

I like the confidence of the straight to the camera "this is what we're gonna do and we can do it" The problem might seem a little niche but it certainly worked for Slings and Arrows. I know there are lots of funny ideas with this trio.

    Giovanni M. 5  posted 10 years ago

Hey Nathan! Thanks for your thoughts and comments. I'm not sure that "niche" is the word I would use. A town full of people banding together, butting heads, and building toward a united vision. That's not "niche", that's universal! Everyone in this country is trying to build to something bigger, something better, for themselves, their family, and the community around them. Watch our week 5 video and see how the world can identify with the people of Tulip. They have a dream like you, and who knows if they'll attain it. But it'll be hilarious to watch them try.

    Holly's Photo
    Holly P. 6  posted 10 years ago

Thank you Nathan. We have no shortage of ideas that is for sure. In regards to the problem being "niche"; I wouldn't call it that. It is something that happens to many small (or large!) organizations whether they are in the arts or not. We aren't interested in just examing the in's and out's of what makes theatre thrive or fail. We are interested in how when problems occur how people react and take action. Keep following and please vote.

“The novelty and freshness you'll bring to the field won't come from the new ideas you think up. Truly new ideas are rare, and usually turn out to be variations on old themes anyway. No, your freshness will come from the way you think, from the person you are; it will inevitably show up in your writing, provided you don't mask it with heavy-handed formulas or clichés.”
    ― Orson Scott Card

I read this, and think of you. Being different just for the sake of being different doesn't always result in a good idea. I think you're different because your concept is really, REALLY good. You're creating from your gut, and from what you know. Your minds are wild.

Other groups are super different too. And that's great! Originality comes from being present in your own magic place. Trying to be original just to be original often results in something kinda lame. Looking forward to seeing what else you cook up! 'Cause I'm hella HUNGRY.

Love the cutouts, definitely creative there. I'm just very unclear on what the whole thing is about. I've watched all your videos and from the synopsis I take away that it's about people in a small town that are trying to pull their theater out of ruin. It's just that I'm having trouble seeing how your videos relate to this. I also wasn't too clear about how this video explained how you were different from the rest since all of the videos out there have characters and all characters are bound to be unique. Good luck with the competition though, it does seem like you guys are clever with your ideas!

Hi Christina. Yes a lot of shows have funny interesting characters. I mean we're up against a bunch of really talented people who are great at making insane weird people up! But again I think our characters have a depth that can sustain story and are something we can build off of. So that when the town debt problem is eventually solved we still have somewhere to go! We can build off the characters that the audience will absolutely love and be invested in their journey. That's what sustains and that does make us different.

Hey Franziska! We're stoked to see Andrew's submission. Good to see some more AB talent in this. Thank you for the well wishes. So, true lots of great characters on ComedyCoup. Everyone has a different way of asking the 'different' question. Some see it as how are we different than other projects or other shows on TV, a different style, a different way to get out of bed in the morning. Ultimately, we went with our gut on this one. Our characters are fully fleshed out, outlandish, relatable, lovable, with a touch of healthy insanity. Our focus is with creating people that you would want to follow for years. 6 or 7 seasons at least. Plus, the world they live one of our big priorities. It informs everything about the characters. The focus and detail we put into doing that is a differentiator to us. We see already how it has helped us stand out from the pack. I hope you begin to see that too (: Keep following! And VOTE!!

This video does focus on the characters, which, I suppose is the differentiator. I thing one of the main, unmentioned things in this video is the vision. An entire town, described in a unique way.

Is the paper-doll thing a persistent device in the final product?

Hi Andrew! Thank you for recognizing the vision! We love it. The paper-dolls are proving to be quite the hit. So I am sure we would bring it back into the series in an appropriate way. The idea behind the paper-dolls is that we are not afraid to incorporate theatrical elements into the show. Anything from an episode with a distinct genre or nod to a well known play like, "Noises Off". The possiblities are endless and we look forward to discovering them and creating an original series.

Back stories are very well covered, small town dynamics are a great backdrop too, I'm curious as to other characters, and the over arching narrative concerning where the funny shall always bloom, though I know that the charm of the characters alone is solid, so I'm not worried. Can't wait to see where these cats end up.

We've talked about it! We want to do that too! Depends on the mission, time, and actor availability. I am on the Island at Chemainus every week for a show and ferry back on weekends. So sometimes we just need to adjust and use cut outs haha.

Move over, Aaron Sorkin... Holly and Gio just upgraded the "walk and talk" to the "180 fulcrum walk and talk," not only giving the impression that the story is moving forward, but also that it's moving forward while sandwiched between two enthusiastic people who won't let you escape until you've heard them out! It's kind of like being the guy standing in between two long-lost friends on a crowded subway, but it's funny, so you don't want to kill yourself. McLovin it... :)

I love the artistic choice of using cut-outs and single-shot camera pans between actors for this video and the explanation of the overall concept is nice and clear! However, I'm not sure that a description of the characters and the vow that you will go all-out with them in the show is a differentiator. All of the projects in Comedy Coup have characters. But if your camera work and paper cut-out choice is a part of the show, THAT would be a great differentiator and would be very pleasing to see.

    Holly's Photo
    Holly P. 6  posted 10 years ago

Thanks Adam. What does differentiator mean to you? Seems like a lot of teams have taken their own twist on it. Which is awesome! More variety in the creation process. I agree, no doubt all the shows have characters. If they didn't then we would be on "Planet Earth" and it could be strongly argued there are characters on that show too. Ahhhh Characters! What I am trying to say is that we are a character-driven comedy; not a joke-driven comedy. Of course, there are characters in joke-driven comedies and jokes in character-driven comedies. Both are great formats! Ultimately, our priorities lie with the characters. Plus, we are aiming for a blend of both formats. We want to bring that; which you are noting with our camera style and wicked paper cut-outs. Stay tuned. Your feedback is always welcome!

Great camera work, and editing. Way too light on the laughs though. The humour (or lack there of) is more slow moving akin to maybe a "Less than Kind" type show, (or at least it appears this way) in which case 90 secs is too short for a joke to play out. Need to amp up the laughs to stay competitive in the Coup I'd say. It is all about the comedy guys!

Not laughing yet Art? Sucks! I mean, shucks! Both work I guess. Okay okay okay okay, since you asked we will amp up the laughs so that you jump on our tree. Our bush. Our prickly pear. Whatever gets you screaming, "STOP TICKLING ME YOU NUT!"

But seriously; WHAT DO YOU LAUGH AT ART?! I neeeeed to know. I am going to start pulling my hair out until you tell me. I may be bald in the next video if you don't tell me. That would be really tragic and hard to explain. Our comments feed would be exploding with, "Woah, Holly...stressed much!" "Woah, Holly I didn't realize you had the "C" word." "Woah, Holly....you're hot. Can I have your number??"

Let's all avoid that, K? So, Art, tell me; WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH!

Jesse - Oh there will be more, and more and more more more MORE! GLAD YOU ARE ON BOARD. Also to Diane below - That's right. Gio and I filmed Week 3 in Chemainus on Vancouver Island this week. The wickedly generous and talent-filled Chemainus Theatre lent us their space to make this video POP POP POP.

This film was made in Vancouver, but set in an artistic Alberta tourist town. Hmmm, very interesting. You've captured my interest. The characters look interesting. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Loved learning more about the characters. This show has so much possibility. I hope it gets the CBC spot!

We do too! We are working on making sure that our show has the legs. Will Ferrell Sized LEGS! Or...just plain big legs; whatever we can afford really. Which is not much, so the $500K would be sweetttt.

Thanks Pat! I like you. As in; if you like the concept you are liking me and my peeps personally and that is pretty swell to me. Don't worry, no need to feel creeped. I'm just weird. Totally normal!
