It was a fair attempt to portray how you are different from the rest of the competitors in the field. It can be difficult to explain what sets one group apart from another in a way that is consistently funny. You may have slightly missed the mark this time but there is still a spark of promise there.

There isn't much character depth or definition, I would prefer to see the too brothers have specific personalities and traits rather than trying to loosely rely on the goofy stereotypes.

I enjoy the weird guys of Wharf Rats and think the stereotypical goofy man from PEI is a catch clone.
We see the dope scene all too much and the booze aspect is pushed at us all the time.
If we are to see true comedy then loose the booze and drugs and show how men of low esteem can grow daily and encounter weird thoughts and behavior as they grow up.
Men encountering lack of work can actually be written to a comedic activity with hope and gratitude
for perspiring to go back to grade school..

Agreed. As a Maritimer, this stuff is truly offensive now. The rest of the country already thinks of us as lazy and near stupid - that attitude even ends up in our national politics and policies. It's like Polish jokes or Newfie jokes, long past their prime. As clever as some of the gags are, they shouldn't have made it out of the baiting shed.

Thanks for the comments Kathleen. I don't quite see how two dumb characters become representative of anything other than those characters really. From now on Ill only make shows about maritimers that are rocket scientists.

Honestly I don't want to see another show that puts Canadian's in that stereotypical light from the fisherman stuff to the accents it's just not an accurate depiction of what Canada is in its entirety its only a small part of it. And also the fish thing was not cool....:(

Thanks Kat. Im not sure how one show can be "representative" of Canada - a massive landmass with cultural complexity. It does poke fun of a few things from a specific culture while also showing great love for them.

Have enjoyed your take on comedy and see lots of room for development. I agree with Mary Ann's comments about the use of potty humour can only take you so far and that in small does it doesn't hurt, large amounts may. Hope you take the comment in the spirit in which it was offered. Look forward to your progress.

Thanks Ed. We're not all about potty humour. As you may have noticed we used 0 swear words...on purpose (I don't think any slipped in there). Thats a big difference compare to a lot of team strategies.

Also - we understand the limitations of potty humour, especially on TV, but right now the competition is on the internet....which means a little bit of naughty is a good thing.

I have a hard time believing that this show has a lot of potential depth. It's good on the surface but I can't help but feel like there is still a lack of long term plan for how this show and is characters can evolve. How this project has a ton of views is beyond me

    Hi Fellas,
So does it help to know something about your commenters? Just in case, I am a white 65 year old female, married for 41 years. Oh and I am an artist and love comedy. Having said all that, my comments are coming from that angle.
Ok, I got several good laughs watching your videos. Good delivery with lots of funny surprises. Loved the lobster race, but maybe it could have been funnier if the lobsters were backwards...isn't that the way they get their speed in the water. Also liked the brewing of the mushrooms and having it our of china cups, good contrast....didn't see that coming..
I think that using sex and potty humour should be VERY limited as it looses it effectives if used too often. It needs to be a surprise to be funny. Like an intense spice. Sparingly.
Their accents were light enough that I was able to get every word....but they still had that down east flavour.
It has made me want to visit PEI. I am ashamed to say it is the only province I haven't visited.
It'll be interesting to see where you go with this.
    Good Luck.

Thanks for the comment Marilyn G. Our brand of comedy is very East Coast inspired, being from the smallest province in Canada we feel there isn't much that actually represents PEI so we tend to stick to what we know. One thing we do have in common is the coast itself whether it be west or east !!

We're certainly writing some interesting female roles. The main issue for the challenges is the tight timelines - getting people quickly for fast shooting. So - woman are not ignored in this world! We just don't have any female actors at the moment. Just the three of us, one car, 5 buck, a 12 pack and a half box of smokes.

On one hand I can see how there is something universal here, but I think comedy that relies on a rather one-dimensional stereotype/character isn't strong enough comedy to hold up an ongoing series .

We agree. We're working with pretty tough limitations and are itching to try to go beyond what we have done. The script stage will be great for that! That said, I don't know many people like these two characters. We see them more as cartoons.

A little too folksy for me. Plus the nudity may no be suitable for prime time CBC audience. Are there other characters beside the two wharf rats because it will get rather boring if these are the only ones on the show week after week. In addition to expanding your cast I would suggest a chance of scenery would also add some pizazz. As much as I love to see the ocean and sand, these fellows must have another place that they go home to at night. I don't think smoking sure be promoted on prime time television. Good luck with your project.

Hi Nancy - yes its folksy in a way. Nudity - well, we don't think there will be nudity in the show BUT the competition is on the internet. We're trying to use that to our advantage by playing with things now that we may not get to use later. Certainly a show will have more characters, locations, people...but right now were a crew of 3 with one car and 10 bucks. And we think the beach and ocean is better than a lot if interiors...its beautiful! We do our best. Also - the cig is never lit! Martin is a non smoker.

But, this video does show how you're different, how you have heart, how you have a great backdrop, and how you're utterly shameless. I found that out of your three videos this one seemed to relate to your synopsis (of basically two brothers trying to get their inheritance) the best. I have to say I some what agree with Adrian that you can only make so many jokes about fisherman and the bumbling brothers While the accents and such do attract my attention I am not sure I would be able to hold my interest over a extended period of time for a weekly comedy show maybe people thought the same when Beachcombers came out which was a show I grew up with. Thank Adrian. Its hard to really show the show when we've had less than 5 minutes so far, which have been dedicated to specific challenges as well. Not sure why you would think there are only so many jokes about fisherman as opposed to say - baseball players, office workers, rich wives, poor roommates, coffee shop workers and any number of jobs and lifestyles that have in fact been made into popular shows. And we're from PEI!

Thanks Chris - it was a particularly difficult challenge, not because we find it hard to say why we're different but also because we want to make sure the video is funny in only 90 seconds. But - location is key...as per the examples laid out in the Comedy Coup mission paragraph for the week (the Flight of the Concords example with regards to new comedy in New Zealand). Along with our type of humour which I don't think we need to describe in order for the audience to get. Along with the fact that there haven;t been, to my mind, edgy fishing village comedy shows. I think while we may not have been explicit in our answer, that we did manage to show visuals that are different, describe the setting of the place, and mention that PEI and Wharf Life has not been addressed in this way.

I like the characters and the specificity of the humour. Perhaps it's just a limitation of 90 seconds, but I don't really get a sense of what the show could become and what situations these characters could find themselves in. It's funny stuff though.

Thanks Aidan - it really is hard to meet the weekly challenge direct on, show a bit of what the story could, and do a different sketch all at the same time in 90 seconds. Take a look at our synopsis and stay tuned - maybe there'll be a challenge that helps us clarify the show to the audience. But our first priority is simply to have funny videos, even if it means not being as clear on the challenges as perhaps some teams are.

Hey guys, great job on the submissions so far! Love the narrative style of this week's entry. As a kid I once threw a bottle with a note in it into the water up in Naufrage. It burst into flames too.

I think that there are or have been many shows like this on the CBC. They are funny but this is just more of the same.

Hi Sharon. Thanks for the feedback. We don't deny we have influences from CBC, but we do deny there have been many shows exactly like this. We draw from the past and we do some things differently. Keeping watching and hopefully we'll change your mind.

As a BCer and ALSO a proud Canadian (before one jumps to assumptions of the contrary...) I find niche Canadiana themes to be... boring (see: "Red Green Show" "Corner Gas" "Little Mosque..." to name a few). Now, that doesn't mean they don't belong on television in SOME capacity, nor does that mean they are bad shows. It would just be great if something refreshingly original AND not so Provincial or specific to such a small demographic was given some play. I think this show would do well broadcast on a CBC Maritime, or CBC P.E.I. if such a thing even existed. I really don't see something like this breaking in the national scope or to a wider audience than what it is based in - Maritime humour. That being said I have LOL'd at several of the PEI Encyc vids these guys have made...

Art - Thanks for your time and the feedback. Its appreciated. We certainly have thought about this A LOT and in my opinion the best shows do two things at the same time - they be specific about location and environment and some of the humour while keeping some humour and themes very broad. We haven't really had time in these videos to really push our themes, but we certainly aren't losing sight of a national audience - our show takes place on the east coast with east coast characters and we hope to show its more than that. But we don't plan on hiding that either.

the characters aren't bad and I like the Canadian feel but not sure if this is an exciting enough idea. I didn't really get a feel of what exciting things could happen and I'm not sure if I would tune in.

thanks for the comment carly - it's certainly hard to get all our ideas out in 90 second vids along with (trying) to meet the challenge. don't give up on us yet!

I dont see how a show based on a bu ch of canadian stereotypes can last for long. I mean sure this could be fumny for 4 or 5 episodes but I dont think the character are complex enough to make a whole shoe out of it. And I dont understand how this video was suppose to answer to the mission of the week. I hope you prove me wrong in your future videos

The first couple of videos were pretty good, but this one doesn't have the momentum the other ones had. Maybe I was expecting it to match this week's mission. I kept waiting to see what makes you different, but I didn't really see it here. This was basically a mini-episode, and that's not what the missions are all about.

Hi Brandon - well I think in the end we tried to clarify the type of world you would see that you might not see in other videos from other parts of the world. And I think we tried to let the visuals we use - wharf life - be up front and center. From the beginning we didn't think we wanted to spell out how we were different because we haven't seen another video that inhabits this world in the way our characters do. Thanks for the watch!

Micah: Yes I said dicks were sticking out at me, deliberately.
Jason: I'm not going to split hairs over what is or isn't a dick joke... But watch a few more vids with clear and present dick jokes, and the subtly of yours fades into status quo.

Thanks for the comment Caleb. I think there's a whole lot more to this video than dick jokes, if there really even is one in this video. Underwear and some nudity, but not really a dick joke per se (and I don't remember one in our other vids either). Regardless - thanks for the watch and keep yer eyes out for our next one.

Colloquialism and background is attractive. The nonsense has appeal. I have seen enough of his butt so don't wear it out. Looking forward to see more plot development. I like the notion of down east.
