When the grim reaper hires three awful friends, they get to eagerly pick one victim every week.
View ProjectHow is Killing It original? The show is high concept (at least one person dies on screen every week) and the writing is funny, sharp, and dark. But instead of telling you this, why not show you? We shot a concept video from our pilot episode that begins with four roommates discovering the Grim Reaper in their apartment. He claims that one of the friends must die, and they get to pick who. Enjoy.
Fave 37 Views 634Great work. I love the pacing. You're hitting all the beats perfectly and giving each snappy line just enough time to land before moving onto the next. Some of the other video's I've watched allow their jokes to die on screen instead of the people and the energy just drains away... not Killing it, the energy is awesome. Keep it up and I can't wait to see what's next!

Killing It has to be the most professional of the shows on here. It's very slick, the comic timing is excellent, and it feels like something that's already on TV. The dark, sardonic humor fits our time, but it may be hard to keep the characters likable over many episodes.
I really loved this weeks video and the laid back nature of the grim reaper. Almost fell out of my chair when the angelic singing turned out to be a ring tone. Funny stuff, love to see you advance.
Great concept.
I laughed so freaking hard. Love the subtle details of the characters and how they prove themselves to be ruthless. I can see this show being super entertaining in a very dark way.
I’m impressed with your team and have liked the show's concept and development from the beginning. I think you have the right stuff to go all the way and I’d bet my next meal on it. That’s saying a lot for a retriever.
I find this show quite hilarious. I like how you set the Grim Reaper up, his features and actions. It's interesting, and keeps me wanting to know what happens next. As you said, a character dies each week and although that is a very unique idea and a great idea for the show, I think you might also want to be cautious because you could lose viewers very easy. But then again, if you don't give time for the viewers to get attached to a character then there's no loss at all. But either way, I find this quite enjoyable and do hope to see you progress!
The concept is fun, it grabs attention but I think you can pump up the stakes. Maybe it would be funnier if the characters cared more and were a little more realistic in trying to figure out what the hell was going on.
NOOOO!!! Not Amy!!! She was my favorite character! LoL. But in all seriousness. Killing off a character, every week? It kinda sounds like a cult. Not to mention the little, fact, that if you kill off a new character, every week? You're eventually gonna run out of characters. Then what?
I like the concept and the execution (pun unintended) of the video was good. Perhaps it's our cultural expectation for blood and gore, I was a little disappointed by the simple nature of Amy's death by finger snapping. It doesn't have to be gruesome, but it didn't have the comedic punch I was hoping for. Still like the idea and wish you luck in the vote!
I like where you are going with the concept, it's interesting how funny the idea of a lay back high grim reaper really is. Shorts, long hair, hoodie, angelic ringtone ... luv it. Can't wait for more
Best of luck in the competition and congratulations on your differentiator video for this week. Look forward to others.
It is an awful lot of work for fans to actually participate in this contest. I would rather that the people in charge just pick the best one. Good luck.
Very original idea. It was nice to see a clip from your actual show, great acting and writing. Good luck on making the top 15!
I love the concept for this show! It reminds me of a few of my fave cartoons from when I was younger (stuff like the grim adventures billy and mandy and south park). Did you guys maybe take a bit of influence from those shows? i.e the dark and satirical comedy style? Id really like to see how this concept will progress I love black humor shows, the darker the better . Good luck I hope you guys make it into the top fifteen and I really hope dookie squad will see you guys in the top fifteen. Peace and Love
The Dookie Squad Team
I can afford a shovel... ahahaha! this is a very good idea, and would be interesting to see all the different ways someone new can get killed every week.
Real reaper ringtone, nice touch. Funny when I realized the chanting wasn't coming from "the aura" but actually from his phone. St. Peter as the caller, that's very funny too.
The camera looking through dead Amy's eyes was spooky and impressive filming from that angle.
Ha! Really enjoyable and twisted. "I can afford a shovel" may be my favourite line, possibly because I've used it in the past...
The idea for this dark comedy is awesome. That is all.
Great acting and execution. Yo Pete was great. Wonder how the life of the show will be with people dying and coming back
Visually appealing, good colour, colourful array of actors, snappy cuts. Reminds me a bit of Dead Like Me.
The more I see of other efforts, the more I realize just how unique and creative this is! I am always reminded of the Monty Python ditty in The Life of Brian, specifically " Always look on the bright side of death..."
Thanks Alan! Anyone who drops a Monty Python is alright in our books. Thanks for your support!
Love the ringtone. Not what I was expecting but still entertaining.
Thanks Mike. I think "not what I was expecting but still entertaining" is exactly what we're going for.
VERY original idea and great acting, i think id enjoy tf out of this show!
Thanks Yousaf! We were thrilled with the calibre of acting we received in such a short time period. I think we'd enjoy tf out of making this show for you to watch. Thanks for the comment!
Cute, love the ring tone. I'm confused about the concept - Do characters come back to life in the next episode? (a la Kenny from Southpark? ) Or do you have to keep adding new characters?
Hi Sarah. In our show if someone dies, they die. They're dead. Gone. So you're right, every episode we're going to introduce at least two or so side characters to be potentially nominated for death. Sometimes they'll be family members, coworkers, sometimes they'll be random people off the street. Anyone can die!
That being said, Death does have a lot of power, so perhaps I shouldn't say that everyone will definitely stay dead...
The simpsons already did it. Southpark already did it. its tough to back up something when its completely stolen from somewhere else. Cool Ringtone though. Ill give props to you on that one.
Hi Brian. Our concept, along with many of the top concepts in this competition definitely have elements that've been explored by other shows in the past. I feel what set's all of us apart comes from our characters and writing. In fact, it's funny that you referenced The Simpsons and South Park, because South Park actually did an episode about how The Simpsons have already used almost every comedic idea for a show! If you're interested in learning more about this perspective, search for "Simpsons Already Did It". Thanks for your comment!
The ring tone was perfect.
Continue making those small well placed gags, it works.
Thanks Marie-Michelle. Hopefully we make it to the Top 50 so we can keep making small gags among the death!
Cool
Yeah
I'm starting to get into this concept, I love the current short video, the grim reapers ring tone was hilarious, caught me completely off guard, hoodie and shorts instead of a hooded cape, grim reaper too wasted to make a decision, funny stuff ... more please !!
We really hope we can bring you more, Greg! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, it's appreciated.
I will watch avidly to see who dies next! Positively slain by the dark humour (pun intended)! Curious to know the decision process behind choosing the victim in this episode?
We wish we could show you the script, Iris. Who knows, maybe that'll be a future Comedy Coup weekly challenge? Either way, I can tell you this... The decision process for the gang's first official decision involves the following: baseball, sex, pipes, and revenge. You know, standard death stuff.
I like it! But you might consider a secondary character that reminds us of our morality. Even if no one ever listens to them.
That's a really good note, Rachel. We've spent long sessions trying to hash out how much morality our main characters are going to have. Too much and the show suddenly becomes serious. Too little, and it seems like nothing matters. It's a tough thing to get right! That said, your suggestion is one we've considered and maybe even agreed with.....
Great concept! Can't wait for more!
Thanks Connor! We've got some great (insane) stuff lined up if we make it into the Top 50!
I like the kill of the week feel that this show looks like it's going to have. I liked week 2 video too!
Thanks Linda, we think it's a setup that'll be incredibly fun to write week in, week out. We appreciate the comment!
I really like the tone of the show. A lot of joke were great (especially while they are talking about who should die), but the choice of the victim was evident. Sad David Suzuki isn't playing Death.
David Suzuki isn't playing Death... yet. The dream ain't dead, Abigael. Thanks for the kudos, we appreciate it!
Not bad at all!
Curious to see more. I really like the font you use in the title. Good job , keep it real!
Thanks Josianne! Our talented writer/actor Alysson discovered and chose that font. She's good at pretty much everything. Ryan and I get mad at her for that sometimes.
Ooh, here comes Death! I'm excited to see where this goes. Rock on, guys!
Thanks Nikki. We will rock on. We will never stop. Not even for the man.
I think I recognize that reaper. (This was awesome.)
I dunno, I can't tell if he's the lead singer of the Foo Fighters or the son of God. Tough call. (Thanks.)
neat idea look forward to seeing more
And we're looking forward to hearing back from fans. Thanks for the feedback, Carly.
Death wears track pants! Works for me. Survivor meets Friends meets the Seventh Seal.
If you've got some spare time, we could totally get you to pitch this for us Jon. Would save us some work. Thanks for the comment!
I really enjoyed the pilot. Keep it going. Can't wait for the next episode. Good production & writing. Great team.
OH MY GOD IT'S A TALKING DOG
Really excited about this project. A great, unique concept and good writing. Hope to see it in the top 50!
We hope like hell for the top 50 too, Spencer. Thanks for the feedback!
Like this one.
And we like your comment. Thanks Lindsay!
Hilarious! I'd watch this show in a heartbeat - or lack thereof.
Thanks for the compliment, Alison! We might also use that heartbeat gag for a tagline one day...
This is exactly like that early family guy episode where death breaks his ankle and Peter has to take over. Funny concept with a lot of potential. Maybe check out that episode for some inspiration.
Check out that episode? I've got that episode memorized, Dan! Granted I keep forgetting if it was Adam Corolla or Norm MacDonald as Death in that episode. Can't go wrong with either, really. Maybe we should give Norm a call...
#suzuki4reaper
One day, Lindy V... one day...
This is a very funny idea, I reallly like it. The phone big was hilarious though I think that some of the dialogue needs work to make it seem natural.
Thanks for the feedback, Paula! Dialogue is certainly a tricky thing to tackle, especially when our characters are less-than-natural, but we're going to keep working to hit that thematic sweet spot. Keep up the support, we love it!
I enjoyed the video guys! I like all the characters and what you are going for with this show idea. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next. Keep up the good work.
Thanks a ton Sarah!
Love it! Great writing and fun concept. Also, Justin as a high grim reaper = a thing of genius.
Thanks Charles!
Justin as the Grim Reaper is my new favourite Justin.
If you know Justin in real life, you'd know there's not a big difference between the two (aside from the whole spectre of death thingy).
Well I do think your idea is different , but I am not sure how it will play out in the long term . The modern grim reaper with the cell phone was funny for sure and. I am certainly a fan of "poking fun" at our mortality but I still felt sorry for Amy ! I think it is very difficult to walk that fine line . good luck.
Hi Pat, thanks for your great comments. It's a fine line for sure, and it makes writing the show really fun and really difficult (like most great things in life that are worth doing). And we felt sorry for Amy too. Poor Amy :(
Enjoyed the videos, I think they would be really funny as a sitcom. I think it would be difficult to write, but you've got the potential to make it work.
Thanks for the confidence-builder, Angusina!
The subject of death is very real and can be very sensitive and emotional for most people. To bring out the humorous side of it must be very difficult, but I think you actually accomplish it extremely well. I hope that you make it through to the finals as I look forward to seeing more of your work. Good luck!
Thanks a ton Bill!
I still want to see how the characters end up endowed with Grim's duty.
Stay tuned, Shandi... (unless we don't win the competition, then you'll never know... mwahahaha- that's actually not a scenario we want to happen)
I find your material really creative and funny. I'm glad that you managed to present some of your actual show this week as so I get a better feel for what's going on. It's definitely a dark comedy but from what I've seen you guys can pull it off. You do a really good job of keeping the tone funny and avoiding the darker side of death. Keep of the good work and good luck in the competition!
Thanks for all the kudos, Christina.
not big fan of the tone of the show, why is killing people funny ? i have this question since the first video was released
Hi Mark. Mixing death and humor is definitely a tricky subject to tackle, and there's definitely no way to do it that will please everyone. Hopefully we can win you over with future videos, but we appreciate the feedback regardless.
Laughed at the ring-tone. Funny. - Shirts
Hi Justin, thanks for the comment. Good luck in the competition (unless your nickname is Shirts and you aren't affiliated with the Shirts team).
This is cool!
And so are you for leaving that comment, Ryan! Thanks.
If this is anything like The Killing, I’m very excited to watch it. If it’s nothing like The Killing, I’m still pretty excited to watch it. To be honest, I’m excited a lot.
This is absolutely exactly and nothing like The Killing, so keep being excited, Adam. NEVER STOP, ADAM
Robin's pose is what's really killing it.
We actually had our shoot interrupted by fire marshals because Robin's ass was too hot. Trueish story.
Loved the cellphone gag. Worked really well. I too am wondering what a full episode will look like, but you've got my attention already! Excited for the coming weeks! Good luck :)
Thanks Camden. We already know what a full episode will look like. Hopefully we'll get to show in 2015 :)
I really enjoyed this first tease of what this show could be in all its glory!
The characters are unique, and their different voices/perspectives will play nicely off one another. Love the off-kilter humour. A+ for the abrupt death of Amy. Looking forward to seeing more - keep up the great work!
Thanks for the praise, Courtney. We can never get enough praise. We crave it. Seriously.
nice shooting and everything, but is this really a comedy show or it is just me being too old to understand the concept
Hi Bernie. We realize the concept of our show might not be for everyone, and that's completely okay. We appreciate any constructive feedback, so I'm giving your comment a big ol' like. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Wondering what a full episode would look like... Hope we get a chance to see! Highly original! I am recommending this to everyone!
Your recommendations will help us get to the point where we can make a full episode, Janis. Thanks for the support!
I wish you can still get David Suzuki for the grim reaper! Really funny moments I want to see the characters continue on. Each character has a unique voice in dialogue and really brings out the bad in them, I love it!
Thanks Jessica. We're writing the Grim Reaper in a way that, should David Suzuki or any other celebrity become available, he could be easily adapted. We're dreamers, I suppose.
Great work.
Enjoyed it.
Agreed. A really funny mission 3 video. Looking forward to seeing lots more from this team and concept.
Thanks for the great feedback Lauren. I think we might have to steal your "watch people die on screen instead of jokes" tagline somewhere...
