Blackwater Music is a dysfunctional music store full of barely functioning idiots.
View ProjectIn this week's video challenge Ryan and Danny get into their underground lab to find out what makes for really good TV.
Fave 63 Views 1687You guys didn't actually complete the mission this week. You failed to tell us what makes you different.
Comments (97)
I really like your premise and setting but I didn't think that showing what you liked or disliked about other shows was really relevant to showing us how you are different. Keep it up though guys, you have a really good idea there
Studious; that is my rating for this video after careful consideration and review so that I might meet the one hundred character requirement and earn another merit badge in the comedy coup competition.
Not bad...not bad.
Really liked the video. Thought it had some great bits in it with some hilarious acting. Didn't clarify much but I don't really care. It was funny.
Clearly some very polished and pro dudes are involved in this one. I feel like Week #3 shows genuinely funny guys who just need a bit more of a... script. It can even keep someone of the funny randomness, but maybe... trim?
Sorry this was not as great as your teaser was. Hoping you guys do better in the other videos, I like the concept and the talent just not this video as much.
Nope, you didn't nail it for me. In fact I think that you folks may have gotten the wrong idea somehow. I have no idea how you could take such a good idea and pick the exact wrong direction to go with it. Have you ever been in a music store? You don't need food gags! The thing should be WKRP style character driven.
ive been following and im a fan, good stuff guys. this video was not as great as your others but good luck making it ot the next round! all the besT1
Yeah i like this video, i think you guys are funny. I laughed to all the jokes in this one. I think that the acting is really good and i want to see more of that style of videos for the rest of the comedy coup. Good job guys.
I can see everyone disliking this video for either not showing why their different enough or not being funny enough, but they had to kind of create a balance. With longer time to do this and expand the jokes over, I think it would be great.
it is fine, but not hilarious. I am kind of in tension waiting if the next line will be a good one or the poor one.
your videos are funny but not THAT funny. i dont quite get the hype to be honest. but they are well shot and very professional i just am not too engaged with the concept.
You guys have more than what you seem to give yourself credit for in this video! Start firing off some jokes in the music store already. You guys have good characters, I hope you figure it out.
I think you started out good but now it is time for you to pick up some fresh ideas. The whole dick jokes is worn out, kinda like get an escort in the earlier one. Funny at first but you don't need to wear out a good thing.
They are definitely trying to draw from Wayne and Garth or Bill and Ted. I will keep watching to see if anything else develops.
I have to agree with some of the other postes. I am a bit tired of some of this humour. i'm curious to see more though
Yeah, me too. Good site for a situation comedy. Good characters - need some fleshing out. Good production. There is a difference between comic situations and being outrageous.
Tired of dick jokes. Anyways okay idea but not actually funny and not cause of the dick stuff just wasn't funny
Great characters and writing. Looking forward to seeing them in the working of the music shop as well as their outside lives. funny funny.
I'm not sure the burning Hindenburg reference works, but I dig the music shop setting, and of course the White Snake style poodle hairdo
1- nazy jokes: not funny. 2- still good. 3- good ideas. 4- good quality. 5- but from what i understand in your video what makes you different is your name. it is still pretty funny. but i feel maybe you guys know what are using the winning reciepe but you are not inventing it...
funny dudes, awesome dry sense of humour, people can be critical but i think its great, acting is really fun to watch. Its awesome supporting all this great Canadian talent there is so much to enjoy on comedycoup
Not sure why this one is trending so high and is so popular. Maybe you had a fan base going in. But anyway. good luck to you. It's a cute idea!
funny stuff!
u guys are some funny ass dudes. chock full of laughs and jokes. one could say that in theory the boys came to play in this series... am I right? Or am I Right? Anyways, I think u guys will make it big some day. Similar to workaholics lol!
lol god, everyone is being so harsh on you guys. I think your video is hilarious! i hate to choose favourites, but you two are the funniest characters. I love the dry sense of humour. Keep kicking ass!
Great chemistry on screen. It's like the Workaholics work at Empire Rec...um, Long & McQuade.
I don't really see what was different, other than what appears to be an inability to retain or continually use the music store as a set. To me, that was what set you apart from the other ideas to begin with, so setting a scene outside it only makes it more like the rest.
Perhaps someone failed to inform you guys that this week was all about how you are different from the other competitors. The previous weeks were better.
like Workaholics but with some of my other favorite people.. rad!
This style of humour seem rather crude and not very well thought out when compared to the other projects. That said, the quality of the videos looks great. Maybe some balance can be achieved in later weeks.
In your week two video you talk about this show being "game changing". I'm not sure that you're showing us how that is the case. It looks like there are potentially some really funny characters here, and the trailer made me laugh a couple of times, but since then I haven't been convinced. Maybe you are holding back for the weeks ahead, but honestly, I feel like I'm going to lose interest pretty quickly unless you change your game.
Well, not seeing much here that shows your diversity. You have some funny lines and some funny content. Need to see more of what you have to offer, not other comedy shows. Glad to see that you took it out of the store.
Really strong acting, you guys have obvious chemistry and great timing. I like it. Likely top 5, I would say.
Maybe not the most original concept, but the acting on screen is pretty funny, and there could be some chemistry for classic sitcom style humour in a new setting. Could be funny.
trying to show how you are different is difficult but a video with multiple references to other shows didn't tell me how you guys would make your show
Love you! Love you lots!
We love you you sexy son of a b!
The guys obviously have great chemistry on screen. Would have like to see things pushed out a bit more in this video, but enjoyed the sitcom throwbacks to the roots. Ted Danson!
Other than you name I see nothing that makes you different, and that is only mildly funny How can you use other comedy shows to fill your teaser time? It shows that you do not have much content of your own. How can you go week to week?
I quite liked the references to other shows in this way. I don't think it says anything at all about how much content they have.
Loved the first two videos - lost a little energy on this one but still very interested to see future content.
The wave of Matt G's preteen Youtube fan base really helped get this project to the top ten but there are some big faults with this project. A premise should hook people right away and "Idiots working at a music store" seems pretty bland. Now if I were to randomly alter the premise to "old guys come out of retirement to work at a music store" you can see how that opens things up to a multitude of storylines. I'm not saying to do that since it would be impossible to change your idea now. I would recommend you go back to your premise and figure out what kind of tilt you can do to it to make it more interesting. You can throw in as many jokes as you can fit but if a solid premise isn't there then the jokes are meaningless.
i've been really enjoying mission 1 and 2.
Not sure if this 3rd video actually complete the mission.
You got a great concept, great productions values, great actors and an awesome vibe. I'll make sure to watch Mission 4 and hopefully you guys will nailed it!
I'm not super confident that you'll be able to write a full season and keep it interesting. These videos are pretty funny but I don't see any strong characters who can carry a plot. No one seems human in this show, everyone is just a joke mouthpiece.
Also, there's a mean-spirited, bullying tone that doesn't jive with me. It feels a little too much like you just want to make fun of people for no reason. What's the motivation?
@Forman Personally I disagree. My favourite projects on here are able to give a sense of character and motivation while effectively cracking jokes and teasing the full season arc. I don't see anything here except the jokes, which aren't particularly strong IMO.
If they have good writers then, yes, of course, the show will be good. The question is: do these videos make you think that these guys are good writers (because that's the point of the contest format)? Not just good joke-makers, but good writers. Personally, I don't see it.
All this is true, but it is hard for any of these shows to really give us a true sense of the depth of the characters in these small bits, whether or not it will work does depend on that for sure. The potential is surely here, if they have good writers who can craft strong narratives then this show has a ton of potential.
Mehh
Meh...
I thought your original video was really clever. Your ensemble seemed to have depth and your premise would allow for a lot to happen. I had hoped this week you would reveal what that may be, that you would illustrate this isn't a 'workplace comedy". I have no idea what makes your show different now...
lol
meh.
It's funny and all that but you still should have answered the questions... I feel like I didn't learn anything from that video.
I like the concept of your show, and I like your style of comedy as well. I also love your choice of music (Sons of Butcher!). I didn't really get how this video helped show how you guys were different. If anything, it's similar to a lot of humour already out there, and the show is pretty similar to other slack comedies. I'd like to know more about how this will seperate you.
Really liked the first video, seems legit! But you are beating your dick -jokes- to death!
Nice one! Does Mayday Malone's 3 piece junk attach width wise or vertically? Keep it up! I see a lot of Workaholics references, that's the power of good hair.
Again, great production value in your video. Would have been nice to see an attempt to answer the question though. The humour is a good idea to include, but this video showed us nothing we didn't already know about Blackwater music
Like the fact that you mix music with comedy, you don't see much of that! When I first watched your sketches it brought me back to watching Empire Records when I was younger.
I agree with that dude a couple rows down, who wrote in his comment that it is a tad workaholics like, but hey fack it am i right? kudos.
The humour fell a little flat for me this week. Familiar territory. I love the concept of this show, but I felt like this video was trying to push the envelope but instead just wrote on the back of an old one.
It's like workaholics at a music store. I like workaholics, and dammit I Iike music. As a matter of deductive logic it should follow that I will like this show. We'll see.
I like you guys! I always feel like that humor that lives "over the line" is a bit cheap though. Funny when hanging out with friends, but not generally funny on TV...
I was rather dissapointed with your week 3 video, all you did was reaffirm what we already knew about you :( too bad.
Do you guys have a supplier for your lab coats? I'd really like my own lab coat. Can I just have one of yours?
Valiant effort! I'm clearly not the target audience, but I can see how it could appeal to a different age group.
I did not see anything here, other than your name, that made you different than the competition. Also, not sure what you were going for in watching other successful comedy shows? Did you not have any content of your own to fill the spot? What will you do week to week?
:]
This show has potential, but I was hoping in this week's video to see what makes you stand out... will check you out next week though.
I really laughed at week one of your project, but I did not understand where you were going in week three video. Maybe I just did not get it , but i also missed how you were addressing the ways in which your idea was novel . good luck though.
the penis jokes were too small. i just didn't feel them.
Best comment.
Not really sure what I just watched. I think the avoided explaining your uniqueness altogether. I'm not sure either if it was a good idea showing clips from other shows either, as that isn't your material to share.
It's one of the more honest approaches to the challenge that I have seen. I liked it.
Blackwater music, the blackest of waters. Where did you guys come up with that name? It's pretty ominous.
Hey Team Black Water. I'm here to tell you good work. The clip wasn't laugh out loud funny for me, but I do appreciate the charm of following through with the characters, the music you used and the timing of the editing, coming into and out of your moments.
I may also be in a mood right now...Very tired. Hoping you weren't one to slander our The Dangers of Online Dating mission this week. But if you were, meh. Good job anyways.
It seemed like a bit of a cop-out to not analyze the show and really find out what makes it different. You really couldn't find one thing? Some jokes were funny, some fell flat...not sure you completed conveyed the point of this mission...
I think I understand what these guys are getting at with their approach (that their ‘differentiating’ themselves by trying to be funnier than others, not because it is a high concept comedy) and I think that’s a totally legitimate way to go. if I’m giving ‘creative criticism’, I guess it would just be that the video could’ve made that point a bit clearer
You couldn't have missed the point more Jason. The show is actually incredibly high concept. We did hundreds of hours or research and a show about a bunch of guys working at a business has absolutely never been done. Certainly not comedically anyway. Thanks for the support!
I think your guys play very well off each other and the improv is something I personally would go back to see again and again. I wanted to see a little more as to what would set the show apart from the one hilarious not of sad funny dudes being sad funny dudes. I tried to touch myself during the video and it worked so that's a thing. I am really looking forward to more! Rock on?
The fact that you touched yourself WHILE watching the video and not before or after is EXACTLY what we wanted and is the highest of compliments. We will personally thank you when we win a Gemini.
I'm going to echo many of the other comments here. You didn't really showcase what makes you different at all, except for your name of course. The real problem is the jokes weren't consistent enough to carry the video.
For me, this was a mixed bag - I thought there were some really funny lines, but they were bogged down by a bunch of not-so-funny lines. A bit of a rollercoaster of ups and downs, I think you'll need to bring up the level to your better lines and keep it consistent across the board. Good luck!
I am kinda disappointed to see the last two videos; i thought it was a very strongly put together show from the teaser, original or not, still pretty strong show; but after the mission 2 ? i really don't know if i want to see you guys on CBC, youtube video is one thing, on national tv is another, not for me, and not for my kids either
Our hope is to be the lead-in to The National with Peter Mansbridge. Looks pretty promising if I do say so myself.
The first week's video made me laugh and I was looking forward to seeing more from you guys, but the last two videos just seem lacking. I think you guys can do better than penis jokes....right?
Like vagina jokes too? I realize it wasn't very inclusive Jordana. We will take your criticism into consideration.
lol, jordana, i don't know if they will actually give a f**k about what others are thinking about their video, according to their last video
They're looking for creative criticism this week so here goes! :)
I wasn't feeling it this week. I think you guys should have gone right to the starving joke. Best of luck on the Top 50!
Looks like a solid concept and it's shot really well! I know it's super hard to do in 1:30 but i can't wait to see what makes each character different as their voices feel pretty similar. Funny stuff though, good luck!
I'm worried that you guys might be a one trick pony. I did find your first video was full of jokes, but your second and third seem to be lacking. Maybe it's because there was more time to do the first video but I would think if you are running in a comedy competition your number one goal should be to keep the funny alive. You are doing well vote wise though, so good luck with the competition!
You need villain on the show named Rodrigo.
Now we're talking. Like maybe a rival music store owner??
This is a cease and desist notice from NBC Universal regarding your use of clips from Friends and Cheers.
We have OJ's lawyers. We're untouchable pal.
These guys are all hilarious and have several other projects that have been a major success! I can guarantee that if you vote for them you will be pissing your pants with laughter once the show comes out!
What I like about this is you guys make me laugh. You've got great timing (I'm sure the editing helps too) and obviously are naturally funny. This week's challenge seems to have a lot of teams faltering... but after watching this again I realized you totally answered the challenge. What makes you different is you. And you are people I would watch. You're funny. So sure, maybe you haven't created some insane situation. Who cares? I want to watch funny people with good timing in creative situations. I think you've delivered.
Holy fuck Krista it's a relief that someone gets it. But it's also very disconcerting that 90% of people still don't. Appreciate the support!
I think the content is funny, but didn't really convey what's unique about this project. What your provided us here is a series of funny one off jokes that could be delivered by anyone else and be as funny.
Is being funny not enough!?! What else do you monsters want???
TIM ALLEN IS GOD
It wouldn't be funny delivered by Tim Allen
I thought your week 1 video seemed like everything else, so didn't watch week 2's. But since you seem to be popular, I thought I'd give you a try this week. But honestly, I was looking at the clock half-way through... why are we watching other sitcoms? Boring. What makes YOU different? I didn't get an answer.
Nice use of the dick joke boys! As the creator of the dick joke, it's nice to see it remain popular!

Your royalty cheque is in the mail Patrick! Thank you for allowing us to use it.
I liked this show from the beginning. It is interesting how these guys minds work. Penis's and music go together. Think Tommy Lee. I am very hopeful for this project. I am always intrigued by the writing too.
Really trying to discover why this show is rated so highly. I have watched each week and I still don't see the funny. I'll keep an open mind.
Can everyone just take a deep breath and try to remember that these are jokes. When we said 'Fuck You' that was a joke.... Because it's supposed to a comedy and whatnot.
This is a response towards Ryan's comment
not sure if i got the vibe wrong, but i feel wow towards your answer or the way you answer it; i think you do carry about the attitude from your week2 mission -- if you don't like our video, then f**k you quite throughout
Judging by ur photo Helen I do doubt that your our target 'Demo' as they say in the biz.
i really don't understand how can this project has so many followers and high rating; watched 3 videos, they aint funny and this one doesn't even tell me why you are different, just plain weirdness
Bernie our weirdness is what makes us different. However if we were to explicitly come out and say that we would kind of lose that element. Thanks for the support!
for the most popular show in this Coup, regretfully this one falls far off the mark. I have to agree with Carly and Kyla... and most of the others. Nazi jokes ("we are too dumb to realize its a Nazi vid but love the marching"?) c'mon guys!
C'mon Art!
judging by your last nine posts i get the feeling you don't like us... call it a hunch
you guys are funny in front of the camera but this was not done that well. I still don't know what makes your show different than any other sitcom. Need more info on what to expect, characters, and challenges involved.
i agree ! couldn't watch the 90 sec of the video ...
This was a tough assignment. I liked how it started, swapping glasses/goggles, reviewing old sitcoms, but call me crazy, but penis' aren't that funny. Tell me more about the caterers and quirky characters.
Penis' will be funny for as long as they can be put in things. Once that changes we will re-evaluate.
yes they are that funny
this was a surprisingly tough assignment. its hard to write a sketch, be funny, and deliver specific information all in 90 seconds.
Penis used to be funny until everyone is using it
You guys didn't actually complete the mission this week. You failed to tell us what makes you different.
I don't really see what is different, other than what appears to be an inability to retain or continually use the music store as a set. To me, that was what set you apart from most of the other ideas to begin with, so setting a scene outside it only makes it seem like the rest.
Rather surprised with the number of "fave" One penis two penis three penis, swastika, Simpsons a lot of copied material rather than original. Perhaps original creation would be beneficial rather than eked out material.
I'm going to have to agree. I don't think I really get what's going on here. It seems funny though!
They said the name is different. They didn't fail us :)
It was literally the last thing they said.
You're quite the stickler 'Chris C.' Would it honestly have satisfied you for us to make up some bs how we are so different and this has 'never been done before'? We're not trying to reinvent the wheel here. We're trying to make funny TV.
wouldn't not doing the mission make us different? were meta get wit it.
I didn't like the first week. You kinda had some of my attention the second. Now you have lost me this week. There are enough stoners walking the streets so I don't want to watch one here.
We disagree. We think there are way too few stoners walking the street and if we win we will be distributing free drugs to everyone that votes for us as well as all children in Canada. How's that for different?
x) I'm honestly loving this. It's weird and makes me laugh. Can't wait for the next video! ^-^
Meh, this wasn't bad guys, but it wasn't very good either. You basically abandoned the concept of the show in a video to showcase how you're different, but the best you could come up with was that it's only your name that makes you unique? I guess I expected more.
It's called a 'joke' Brandon. We tend to do that being a comedy show and all.
I totally agree with you Brandon they kinda butched this video and hoped people wouldn't care if they Didnt answer the question
@Brandon I actually give them props for admitting that the concept isn't all that different. Better that than desperately arguing a point that is blatantly false like so many of these other vids.
I think what is different about Blackwater music is how much they talk about penises. Way to be inclusive.
It is a theme throughout each of the clips, but as I waded through the entries in #BeDifferent it became a startling trend...
