When the grim reaper hires three awful friends, they get to eagerly pick one victim every week.
View ProjectWhy would Killing It make for a great news story? In this week's video, we reveal the story behind our show and what makes it so exciting. So check out our video, check out our upcoming fan event, and get in touch! Let's laugh at death together.
Fave 39 Views 458Really interesting concept! You guys put out a pretty solid video explaining the concept.. it's definitely a concept that could provide a lot of room for good writing and plenty of episodes. This is one project in particular that I will find interesting to see how you "Flip" your concept if you make it into the top 15. Good luck!

Congrats on making the top 55 and I hope you move on! You've done a lot with such a short lead time and your concepts is definitely unique!
Great job making top 55, There is some stiff competition out there and more than a few laughs. I think you will be in the Top 15 ! Good luck
This is an interesting hook!! Congrats on making the top 55 and good luck in the rest of the voting. Wishing you the best in the competition, your good friend Sharon.
At first, I thought it sounded like a Canadian "Dead Like Me", but while it might have vague similarities, it looks like something all its own, and that something is funny.
I hope the teams with the machines behind them on social media don't push the great ideas out of the top 15. Are you reading this CBC? #killingittv is great!
I have to hand it to the people who put this competition together. In a million years I never would have checked this out on my own account, but they make it a game with points and voting and all that. Suddenly in checking out videos like this and quite enjoying them. I hope I see this able in the top 15. Over all I epiphany say you guys are well. Killing it.
I've loved the premise from day one and I'm really looking forward to what you can do with it moving forward. I expect to see you in the top 15 and am excited to see much more.
Quite the competition from the east to the west coast and such an excellent group of participants makes it hard to pick just 15. I hope CBC gives you each a coffee mug or something for getting to the top 55. Best wishes to all.
people using the word "concept" like it's a cliche brah, i think i agree with them but for the reason that death is something that will touch us all and all y'all reading this will be no more some day. good to laugh about
This show sounds like a really interesting concept, and you did a good job bringing that across and showing why people will like this show. Good luck!
Hey guys congrats at making the top 55. Good luck with the next step!
Well the final hours of the vote to get to the next level are approaching now so it is up to the voters now to get you there. Best wishes to you for success and nice work on getting through to the top 55 for all those able who were able to get that far.
I really like the concept and the interaction of the characters I've seen so far. I know you're a shoe in for the top 15, and I'd love to see a lot more. Look forward to it!!
Good Job Guys keep it up and you'll be top 15 for sure!!!! Really funny stuff! Can't wait to see more!
There are not any CBC shows I can think of that feature unlikeable characters or cover such dark subject matter so this would certainly fill that niche!
Good job on this week's challenge. Good luck in the remainder of the competition. You have a funny concept here and hope you make it through the next round! Cheers!
the setting is really adding a lot to the motion of this picture. perhaps including a bit more musical and graphical effects can help you guys go a long way
It would be a great movie. I'm not sure how well it will work as a series, but dark comedies have proven very successful on the small screen, so I'll reserve judgement until I get a better look at your characters and quality of writing. Best of luck in the voting.
I think it definitely has potential, I saw their live hangout preview and the plans for the future are really interesting and funny and I'd put money on them to see it made!
The grim reaper casting ideas are so great. I don't know how you'll decide, but I'm voting for Killing It so that you get to. Decide, that is.
I get that you wanted to make your concept clear and I think you get a check mark in that box. But I do think it could have been funnier, so we know you can blend both without having to sacrifice clarity for humour or vice versa.
There are a lot of really strong submissions, I don't know how your project will stack up, but best of luck. :)
Congratulations on making the top 55 on killing it . Really liked your skull poster and the one where your voting on killing the 10 year old. This week doesn't seem as strong as previous showings. Good luck
Fun fact: the skull we used for our poster is the 10-year-old's! Or at least I assume it is; we just found it buried somewhere. Thanks for your comments!
Great stuff! Didn't know you guys had to throw together a concept/teaser so quickly. Very impressive! And any show drawing inspiration from Kids In The Hall is a show for me.
Comedy Coup actually name dropped The Kids in the Hall when they announced this competition, and that's actually what got me really excited for it (well, that and $500,000). I love Kids in the Hall so much. Thanks the comment, Franco!
Interesting idea. I think there could have been a bit more comedy in this week's video, but it definitely explained clearly what your concept is.
Thank Elaine. We wanted to make sure we produced something that could be sent to media outlets without them being confused as to what the hell is going on. Stay tuned to our next video: we're thinking a lot of people will be asking that very question. While they're, hopefully, laughing!
i've always been a big fan of this concept, even since the very start. you have had my support since the beginning and once again you didnt let me down. the strength of your production team really shines through.
Thanks for your support Steven, we appreciate it!
I love the concept and expect you'll be in the top 15. CBC needs to choose something that's out of the box to get some attention and press, and that's you. #davegrohl4reaper The writing is great ... and you're team is killing it - #killingittv
Question: if we got the actual Dave Grohl to play the reaper, would anyone notice a difference? Thanks for the comments, Mr. Dog in Costume!
This video was fine, I guess is all I can say. Didn't get me hyped but I didn't dislike it. Not really seeing the humor from this video alone, especially with the stale narration, but the concept seems interesting, if not a little similar to Dead Like Me. Best of luck.
Hi Deanne. We went for a more 50/50 focus on humor and information this week since this is the video we've been sending out to media outlets. We'll definitely be back to 100% comedy in future videos!
This is a great idea and a strong production. I think you guys will be able to take this to the top 15, and I'm excited to see more from this project. Hopefully the project comes together for you.
I swear I've seen you from somewhere before Kyle, but I can't quite place it. Regardless, thanks for the comments.
great concept, missing a little more humour!
We're glad you like the concept, Pierre-Luc. Hopefully we'll win you over with more humour in the future!
Interesting concept and enjoyed the explanation and early take with deciding to kill the 10 year old. Just really didn't tickle my funny bone yet so with such a tight competition just not sure that it is worthy of my vote.
Thanks for the feedback, Sue!
You guys have an edgy take on this competition, so congratulations on making it to the top 55! I hope you some more content to show us your longevity in the next round
YOU HAVE THE GREATEST FIRST NAME OF ALL TIME!! (guess what the O. in Michael O. stands for). (also thanks for the kudos!)
I can only imagine how much work it takes to put out something each week, having said that I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. I really look forward to seeing this show develop further.
Cheers Greg! Cheers for the great comments, and cheers because it looks like you're holding up a glass in your picture and I feel I have to say something about it. To Comedy Coup!
I'm so excited about this. Can't wait for the pilot.
We're probably just as excited, Lindy! Well, maybe a little less so; you seem super excited. Thanks for posting!
well I must say it does have potential but for how long it would go before it got to be the same old death theme I am not sure.I kind of have that Jim Carry playing the Grim Reaper and I'm really not sure it would hold my interest for to long . Good Luck.
Hi Alvin. First of all, if you know Jim Carrey and think he might be interested in playing our Grim Reaper, could we uh get his number from you? As for your comments, we completely agree that a show that hinges on a gimmick can get stale really fast. That's why we developed the fun hook (death, nominations, etc) and then focused entirely on the characters and their dialogue. While people are going to start watching the show because of its premise, they're definitely going to continue watching it mainly because of our characters and what they say and do. Some of the best comedic shows of the past few decades have had nothing more than the most basic of premises ("a group of people hang out in an apartment" could describe Seinfeld, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, etc.) mainly because the writing focused on their characters and their dialogue first and foremost. That's exactly what we're going to do as well. Thanks for your feedback!
Really interesting concept! You guys put out a pretty solid video explaining the concept.. it's definitely a concept that could provide a lot of room for good writing and plenty of episodes. This is one project in particular that I will find interesting to see how you "Flip" your concept if you make it into the top 15. Good luck!
Thanks Pete. I'm actually really interested in seeing how a lot of projects are going to "Flip" their premise. Should make for a fun week of videos.
Interesting concept, I just wish it had actually "hyped up" the concept more, I like how you guys were able to create the idea so quickly, that is a challenge. I do enjoy the fact that your making death funny, it's not often that that can be done well; so I am interested to see how you can bring the humour to this idea. However, I don't feel you completely followed this weeks challenge. Where is the energy!! It seems as though you didn't recreate a new video for this week, just took to time to dub over it. Even so, it is a cool concept and I would be stoked to see you guys in top 15.
Hi Laura. First of all, you probably win for having the most professional looking avatar. We had a lot of back and forth when it came to how we should pitch this week's video. On one hand, we're supposed to be speaking to the media, but on the other we wanted to provide something interesting for the fans too. But we'll definitely include more energy in our next video, we promise! Thanks for the comments!
Congratulations on finishing the video for this week and good luck in all your missions in the future.
Thanks Jenna. These past weeks have been so busy with creating content, our team usually gives out an exhausted "yay" every time we submit, so it's nice to have someone inject some enthusiasm into getting them done. Hope you check out the next one!
Here are my picks for the top 15, no particular order:
Human Town
Heir Heads
Depflies
Wharf Rats
Just Passing Through
Goons
Blackwater Music
Randy Justice
The Lease
Grahm Clark: Wilderness Man
Roll for Damage
Toronto After Dark
Killing It
Scratch Tracks
Dope Ass World
Haha, the first time my eyes scrolled down the list, I didn't see our show. Immediately thought, "Well that was a dick move." Then I read it again. Thanks for the support, Forman! There are some really strong shows on that list, so we're glad we made it!
Congratulations on the top 55. I like the concept and it has the potential. I found the previous weeks funnier with a little more zing. Tight time frame – very true. I could do it if you gave me 1 month. Look forward to the next round. Good luck.
Hi Sandra. What could you do if we gave you 1 month? Nominate someone for death? That's dark, Sandra. This is a fictitious show! (we promise we'll bring more zing in the future!)
I like your humor. Your concept is an engaging one which would appeal to many. Keep up the good work and I wish you well making it to the next level.
So polite, Lisa. We appreciate your comments and your sleepy dog picture. Thanks for commenting!
Considering you guys only had three days to develop your original concept, you have done amazingly well. I hope you make it to the finals as I look forward to seeing more of your work.
Thanks Bill! We appreciate the support!
I thought this video was really good and would make a great half hour sitcom. I hope you guys make it to the finals as it's great to see a team from Vancouver succeed.
Thank you Angusina. Your dog looks hung over in that tiny picture. Looks like good times.
Congratulations...not only for making it to the Top 55...but for finally coming up with a concept that can be laughed at...or with..Look forward to seeing more of your work. Good luck !
Thanks Debbie! We figure if enough people laugh at death, it'll go away. But I'm not a scientist, so that might not work.
Thank you for making your hook very clear in this video! I think some teams have forgotten to be explicit on this. Unusual concept for a show and could be quite interesting to watch. Best of luck in the competition.
This was definitely a tricky week for videos, Cat, but we're glad you liked our emphasis on the show's hook. Thanks for the well wishes!
Such a great show concept. I already want to watch it and have only seen the week 5 video. Best of luck in the next round
Thanks Lorelei! We truly hope you'll be able to see our show in the near future. Fingers crossed for the next round!
Good concept. I agree there's humour in the most unusual places. Why not death? Wishing you all the best with your project.
Thanks Cheryl. There's humor in everything! Except the Vancouver Canucks. With them, it's only heartbreak. (although if you're not a Canucks fan like me, you're probably laughing right now, so I guess I'm wrong about that too)
Love the concept! Great to see some dark humor in this competition! Its also great that you have a brave sense of yourselves and your idea. Its bold to pitch something about an unpleasing topic to major networks. Best of luck to you guys!
Thanks Jacob! We loved the concept the moment we came up with it, but I'd be lying if we weren't somewhat nervous that it wouldn't be accepted- either by fans or Comedy Coup itself. Thankfully we've received nothing but huge support and we can't be happier about that.
One of the (many) things that I like about this team is that you've acknowledged that your show might not be for everyone - but that hasn't stopped you from standing by your concept. I think this show has the potential to really push the comedic envelope in a dark and interesting way. Looking forward to the online reading!
The moment a CBC executive throws cash in our face we'll change our stance so quick, Courtney. There'll be no more death. Only hugs. We'll be sellouts, I tell you! SELLOUTS!
(or we'll stand by our concept like you said... it's 50/50 right now)
I like to laugh at death. It's funny. Cool concept, I haven't seen your project last week with the art and I really thought it was strong , good luck in the voting. _ Wharf Rats
Thanks Robbie! Something tells me Wharf Rats wouldn't be afraid to dabble with death in-episode either. Good luck with the next round!
Death does suck and we should have a laugh here and there. Even the most taboo topics we should all have a laugh good luck with this round.
That's an awesome viewpoint to have, Sathees. It's not for everyone, but we're glad we're finding an audience with people like you.
Looks great, good luck!
Short but sweet compliments are still good in our books. Cheers Jasmine.
At first look I wasn't all that intrigued by this show but this video has pulled me in! Great job! I didn't think I would be into a death centered comedy but apparently I am! Great job and good luck for the next round!
Thanks Karen! Glad we could pull you into death centered comedy. It's a dream.

not a totally original idea (the Boys in The Hall) but the Grim Reaper is an iconic character. I think there is potential depending on the writing and delivery. Personally I a m a fan of dark humour so looking forward to see what develops.
I'm glad you're a fan of dark humour, Cheryl. While we've naturally drawn inspiration from comedic shows that have, well, inspired us over the decades, we're definitely setting out to create something new. I truly hope we get the chance to show that in the Top 15! Thanks for your comment.
I like the gallows humour. The show takes more risks than others in terms of subject matter! I like the outside-the-box thinking. I'd love to see more! Seems like it could be a funny show.
Cheers Anna! As I just said with our good friend Belinda below, we're all about the risk and, hopefully, the reward! I love the term gallows humour too, never thought of that. Thanks for your support!
Great idea to get dialogue happening about death using humour Risky? Yes, but I get the sense that you can pull it off with great scripting Good Luck to you guys I hope you make to the next stage
Thanks Belinda! You bring up a good point: what's the point in entering Comedy Coup if you're not going to be risky? We're very confident with our scripting, and hopefully one day you'll get to see what we've written. Thanks for the comments!
i like the concept of laughing at death… as long as i don't have to actually see the killing. once i see blood, gore, or some scenes that are too scary, i usually turn the tv off. so if you can pull this off, keep people laughing, good luck.
We promise we're not going to set out to scare you, Diane. The only scary thing that's going to come out of this show is if you're watching it with your friends, and one of your friends laughs REALLY hard when someone dies. Like, too hard. Like, "Hey Alice, why are you laughing so hard right now? It's funny, but you're scaring us."
Other than that, it's all comedy. Thanks for the comment!
You guys did well to put this together so quickly. Good job. Your idea for this show is ... a challenge I guess. Wow! Death is not funny...but you are creating a show to make people laugh about it. I hope it works... Good luck!
Our idea for this show has definitely been a challenge, Don, you've got that right. And we appreciate that you and others can see that. Thanks for the well wishes!
Wow, good for you for getting things together so quickly. And congrats for making it this far!! It is a clever premise because as long as your creativity holds the stories can go any where. good luck!!
Our creativity is definitely going to hold, Karen. Our sanity on the other hand...
(thanks for the comments)
I don't know. I don't find death that funny. I congrats you on your show being put together three days before launch and making it through to the top 55. Hope you do well, but I am not in this.
We appreciate the feedback, Virginia! Believe it or not, it's helpful for us to hear from people who aren't into the show's premise. Regardless of whether or not we can win you over, I hope to keep hearing from you!
I can only imagine the amount of work that goes into putting these clips out each week. I've loved what you've put out so far and look forward to your continued success in the top 15.
Thanks Lex! It's been a ton of work, but I've got to say that pretty much every team in this challenge has risen to the occasion. Appreciate the comments!
Congratulations on making it to the Top 55 and I good lucking on making it to the Top 15!! I absolutely love the idea behind this. Something new and ironically refreshing!
I suppose a show where people get killed every episode is "ironically refreshing", we might have to use that in promotional material. We were actually going to describe our show as "magically delicious", but some leprechaun cereal stole it. Jerks. Thanks for the comments!
As an CineCoup alumni, I know how hard it is to compete with teams who already have footage to pull from. It can actually work to your advantage to keep it fresh, so keep going! Good luck and love your tag line.
Thanks Lindsey! That's really cool that you were involved with a past CineCoup, and I totally agree with using our position as a motivator for keeping things fresh. Cheers for the comments.
It seems to me that you are doing a lot more with a lot less than many of the other teams and for that alone I applaud you. I hope you get the chance to keep showing us more of this unique idea!
Cheers for your comments, Janis. We don't want to play up the "poor us" card, as there are a lot of other teams that are in the same boat we are. We were just letting people (and the media!) know why our earlier video might've looked a wee bit janky. And I sure hope we getting the chance to show you our idea. Thanks again!
Good writing is key, you seem to have that, next comes the execution with the actors (casting) that is huge, and without that in place it is hard to really see what your show could be (especially to the general fan base who may have a hard time knowing a funny joke that is poorly delivered). Good luck this is a very strong premise, though it may where thin very fast as a episodic without some bigger story and character arcs.
Thanks for the great feedback, Forman. While some other teams already have their casting nailed down, we're approaching this competition as a trio of writers who want to prove ourselves first and foremost with our script. Paying a production team, casting directors- all of that we feel can be greatly enhanced by winning Comedy Coup.
With that said, we couldn't be happier with the performances we received from our actors throughout this competition- especially given the time crunch. And in terms of making sure the show's premise doesn't wear thin, that's the last thing we're going to risk happening. Thanks again for the great comments!
As someone around the age of the guy on the bench, I'm one you have definitely pissed off.
I'm sorry you're in the pissed off camp, Kathy! The guy on the bench was an amazing sport; pretending to die over and over and getting pushed onto an air mattress numerous times takes a special kind of dedication. Thanks for the comment!
Congratulations on making the top 55 teams in the comedy coup pitch contest, and good luck going forward as they decide the top 15.
Thanks Ella! If we make it to the Top 15, we're going to celebrate like those penguins in your avatar. Chests all puffed out and everything.
This video is a great example of how you are, indeed, killing it. Keep up the great work, and I hope to see you in the Top 15 next week! Break a leg, kiddos! On the real though, don't kill anybody.
Kiddos? I'll have you know I'm a man of thirty years! That used to mean something, Katherine! I'd tell you that I appreciate your comment if I was so dern angry!
Great video, I thought it was very well structured and got to the point of this weeks mission. Congratulations for getting to the top 55, it seems like your team has the potential to get much further in this competition.
Cheers Georg! We definitely have potential to make it to the Top 15, and as everyone knows, potential is all you need in life! And if that's not the case, then I might be in for a ton of rude awakenings in the near future! Thanks for the comment.
You conveyed your concept very well. Your concept has intrigued me and I hope to continue to see more from your group throughout this challenge. Good luck with the following weeks to come!
Thanks Beth! Hopefully we can continue to show you more.
I like seeing a team of writers tackle existentialism with comedy. If you can pull this off it would make history. Happy to be a part of this, go team! Make it as obscene and horrifyingly entertaining as possible!
"I am Lorde, yah yah yah". (that'll make sense if you watch South Park). Thanks for the comment Alex- Alex who I think might be the actor Alex in our Week 3 video but I'm not completely sure!
I wasn’t super excited about your show idea in the beginning, but this week’s video intrigued me a little. I’m curious to see how you would develop this into a show. Good luck!
That's awesome Jen, I'm glad we're starting to win you over. Thanks for the comment!
It's refreshing to see a group who kind of "got" this week's challenge. This is the only video of yours that I've seen, but I know exactly what your show is about, and I now have an idea of who you are and what you're capable of. I also like that you're not afraid to offend people. A lot of other pitches have been deliberately (and sadly) too broad, or have relied too much on gross out humor.
Our original Hype It! video was actually going to be one and a half minutes of the three of us vomiting on screen and swearing a lot, but we forgot to turn the camera on before we did it. We're such dorks. Glad you liked the video, Jas, thanks for the praise!
The concept and the writing for this project are both solid. The quick jokes are balanced nicely with deadpan humour. That , plus the structure and originality of this idea, definitely make it a show worth watching. I really think Killing It does what comedy should. It makes me laugh, but it also makes me think about death and quite honestly, I would rather have someone laugh at my demise than cry about it.... That said, please don't send the reaper my way yet or I won't be able to vote. Good luck for top fifteen!
Note to self... don't send Reaper to Lauren's house... until after she's voted...
Done! Thanks, Lauren!
You guys did s great job with the info but i found it to drag on, it needed some more funny, Other teams were able to do it and it's going to be a tough week cause there are some many excellent videos in there this week. Good luck with your online HYPE event Thursday night
Hi Sheldon, thanks for your critique! If you're online on Thursday, we'd love for you to check our event out. Cheers!
As usual I enjoyed your entry this week. Glad to see that you didn't make references to current media headline news stories just to attract some attention as some of the other teams have done. Good luck!
That's actually a very important point, Iris, so I'm really glad you commented. We're dealing with a very serious general issue when it comes to death. It's obviously something that affects everyone, every single day.
The whole point of Killing It is to make you forget about those hardships in the world, in your life. Just for half an hour. For half an hour, we want you to sit down when you come home from school or work or whatever, and laugh. That's it. That's all we want to make you do.
And we hope we'll have that chance when all is said and done. Thanks for commenting!
See I enjoy this groups take on death. People are becoming more and more liberal with comedy and harsh subjects such as death, cancer, murder. I think this is an original concept and the idea of a "Chill Grim Reaper" is something I have dreamed about seeing. I'd like to see them in the top 15 for sure.
Can you be our PR spokesperson, Emilee? It pays nothing and people shout at you a lot. It's great!
Great video guys! I thought it was very informative and explained your concept really well. You seem like a great group of writers as you were able to come up with such an amazing idea for a show in the little time you had to work with. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Christina. We are a great group of writers; we're just awful people otherwise.
You are all 'killing it' with your videos hahaha. Really a unique concept and I enjoy the different humour angle you have come up with. Death and laughter are great when you can get a nice mix of both. It's what makes a great horror film. An intense moment followed by a moment breathe and then laugh at ourselves. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!
I feel bad that I laughed at your "killing it" joke, Tom. I tried not to. Thanks for the uplifting comments, man!
this weeks challenge was hard not to make a little dry and boring, but you guys did a good job of keeping it interesting. sell sheet is also really eye catching!
Damnit, we were trying to make it dry and boring. Thanks for ruining our day, Carly.
(Alysson made the sell sheet and she did a terrific job, I agree)
I love the idea for this show. It's definitely peaked my interest. It just seems to be a little less developed than other projects (as you mention yourself). I am curious to see how this turns out because the subject sounds hilarious. I just hope to hear about your plans for production. I think this is the kind of show that requires just the right casting to pull it off. Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks for your feedback, Melanie. In terms of production value, we're definitely not as developed as some other projects. But in terms of the show itself, with its writing, characters, and how the series is mapped out, we're willing to bet we're right up there at the top.
That's why we're so stoked about Comedy Coup - this is our chance to get funding and support from a major network to help us produce a show that we feel needs to be seen. So if you stick with us and our zero budget weekly clips, we promise we'll reward you with laughs. Or at the very least, we'll Like something you post on Facebook.
Definitely one of the more interesting ideas of the videos I’ve watched. Looking forward to more entries from you guys. Good luck in the next round!
Thanks for the praise, Jason!
Great job with this weeks assignment guys! You explained your concept very well and it's insanely amazing how you pulled all of this together in just a few days. Good luck making it to the next round!
Thanks Neda! If we win Comedy Coup, we vow to spend more than three days coming up with and shooting episodes. Seriously, we'll take at least a week next time. Probably.
I think I'm one of those just not ready to laugh at death. But I'm very curious as to how you plan on making it funny in future clips. Very different concept.
Thanks Coby. Being different is the best thing in the world in our books. Cheers for the comment!
As Monty Python"s lyric encourages us to "always look on the bright side of death", it is refreshing that this show exemplifies that aim. It would take a special kind of mind to take the existentialist concept that life is absurd and run with it. I am curious to see how it ends!
That's awesome Alan, Monty Python was actually one of the few inspirations we had when it came to tackling this subject matter. Good eye!
